The British Musketeers
I am a huge fan of the Musketeers, right back to the D'Artagnan and the Muskethounds, and this series does them justice. The backgrounds and cityscape and the Musketeers uniforms look brilliant and authentic to the time period, despite the fact that it was shot in the Czech Republic and not France. As this is a British made series, with a British cast, you have to overlook the fact that they all have British accents instead of French. I think this is a good touch as it would rather the cast do what they did and act well keep in character rather than trying to pull off a silly sounding fake accent. The first episode starts out very much like the classic story. Athos, Aramis, and Porthos are the elite even among the elite company of the Kings Musketeers. I like the fact that the Musketeers are more soldier like in this series. Though they are brothers in arms and would fight to death for each other their personalities could not be more different. Athos is the quite brooding showing signs of a huge trauma from his past. He is the unofficial field commander. Aramis is the personification of a warrior poet. Deadly on the battle field, as he is skill in the art of seduction. On the outside he is the elegantly dress mannered of his comrades, but could this be an act of someone looking for his one true love. Porthos joined the military to escape a life of poverty and crime. Knowing where his life could have gone and where he is now he is probably the most loyal to his comrades. The Musketeers company is led by the Kings military advisor Monsieur De Treville, their main rivals are Red Guards led by the first minister and spiritual leader of France Cardinal Richelieu. The Cardinal is always plotting to increase his already considerable power. I do like the fact that though he is evil there is layer to him that he is acting in what he believes is the greater good for France. A side story in this series is that fact that both companies are trying to gain the services (a battle for the soul) of D'Artagnan. A young country boy whose raw skill with a sword and quick sense of honour impress the Musketeers. However being young and thrust into internal political games cast by Richlieu, and the temptation of the beautiful Milady de Winter, he could be swayed to the other side.A great action series with a great cast, and good character development. The story does move along at a slower pace, but the action more than makes up for this. If you are a have ever been a fan of the Musketeers what this, if you are not, give this one a try it might convert you.

Sheer High-Octane Fun
If you're looking for a faithful adaptation of the Dumas classic, this probably isn't the series for you. If on the other hand you enjoy being taken on a joyous, fun-filled adventure, then you've come to the right place. The Musketeers is something of a diamond in the rough. It's not without it's flaws. Some of the episodes could definitely be stronger, with elements of the storytelling, particularly in the sub-plots, somewhat confused at times. However, there is much to commend this series. It's perfectly cast, looks gorgeous, in every sense and provides enough leather-clad thrills and sheer escapism, to keep you thoroughly entertained. The fight scenes are well choreographed and staged and deliver on excitement without too much guts and gore and the romance and sexual tension which infuses the series, plays brilliantly without becoming too explicit to allow for general family viewing. Not one for young kids but certainly not as "adult" as it's original post watershed broadcast might suggest. One of the real strengths of the series, is the very believable bond between the four male leads, Tom Burke, a brilliant, brooding, troubled and multi-layered Athos, Howard Charles, perfect as Porthos, Santiago Cabrera, an intoxicating blend of seductive, dutiful, dangerous and delicious as Aramis and Luke Pasqualino, a young actor whose star is in the ascendancy and who seems to grow more impossibly handsome with every passing year. He completely nails the role of D'Artagnan, delivering a performance that takes the character from naive but tenacious and avenging Gascon farm-boy, to an immensely brave, loyal and committed young man and valiant soldier. Tamla Kari is also wonderfully cast as D'Artagnan's beloved Constance. In a series which would do well to develop it's female leads as it continues, Kari's Constance is a character you instantly warm to. Far from being reduced to a simpering damsel in distress, this is a courageous, fiery, fun and tenacious Constance for a 21st Century audience. One you can easily believe, would win the heart and devotion of the young would-be Musketeer. Trapped in a loveless marriage in a time of few options for women, D'Artagnan opens up her world, as well as her heart and it's a tribute to both actors and their considerable chemistry, that you're completely emotionally engaged with their journey from the start. There are also some unexpected treats to be found such as Ryan Gage's brilliant King Louis XIII, looking like a cross between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Laura Ashley's upholstery selection circa 1983. Peter Capaldi is, as always, good value as the Cardinal. A 17th Century Malcolm Tucker, only his time mixing religious zeal with political ambition and a wardrobe that makes him look like the love child of Vampira and The Hooded Claw. Maimie McCoy chews the scenery as arch criminal, seductress and Athos' erstwhile other half, Milady De Winter. Look out too for a wonderful performance from James Callis in episode 3, as explorer, lothario and general all round rogue Emile Bonnaire. It's a little bit of genius. Much like Constance and D'Artagnan's romance, The Musketeers is not without issues but give this thing a chance and you'll fall hopelessly in love.

Awesome!
Great stories and sheer realism is what makes this a great series. The only downfall this is not on Blue ray yet. Can't wait for season 2!
