this is a remarkable book, an skilled translator/practicioner guided by his teacher
I use this text as a study guide. Tibetan buddhism is complex and lineage based, yet this straight forward translation seems to suceed in cutting through to the root that they all share.

This is an extremely important translation for our time. It is a joy to read these stories that are so rich with the interactions of Milarepa maturing his students. The songs of realization are full of blessing for everyone, and particularly practitioners approaching the system of mamahudra meditation. The translator, Chris Stagg is not only extremely skilled linguistically, musically, and as a story teller but is also a dedicated practitioner who has been working very diligently not only in study but also in meditation. Finally this particular translation has had amazing support and contribution from our modern day lineage masters and it is felt deeply when leaping into its stories and songs.

Excellent writing! A clear, straight-forward yet profound translation. Also, it has the blessing of the XVII Karmapa which makes it even more precious.

An indispensable work! A great achievement!
A great achievement in translating a vital work. The Garma CC Chang translation stands as a towering work of translation and I very highly recommend it. It is however over 60 years old and a contemporary translation was needed, one probably more accurate in some areas. I will expect that any student with a strong connection to Tibetan Buddhism will want this as well as the Chang edition. It is indispensable.

Impeccable translation of Tibet's most celebrated text
Here is a new translation done under the very close guidance of one of the Kagyu lineage's most authoritative masters, Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche. This text is one of the greatest spiritual treasures of Tibet. Fun and engaging to read; it contains teachings on the entire Buddhist path in the context of the life and songs of Tibet's most revered yogi-saints.

Buddhist Bible in Radiant Venacular
This inspired and loving translation unlocks the deep meaning and inspiration of this "Tibetan Buddhist Bible" and brings a freshness and vibrancy, an immediacy to the stories and songs of Milarepa. My gratitude is immense for this endless treasure of insight. Chris Stagg's translation is a work of exceptional devotion and engagement with the teachings, the gurus, and with the immeasurable breadth of Mahamudra teachings. For beginning students, too! Thank you.

Unbelievably Fresh & Lively
I am very much familiar with the material, as I own the Tibetan original and have offered a condensed version of the text to the German reader, published in 1986 as "Verrueckte Weisheit". Naturally, I also have perused extensively and repeatedly through Garma C.C. Chang's previous translation, which was precious to me. This rendering, however, tops it all. It remains truthful to the letter and the spirit of the Tibetan original & the great yogi's enlightened intention, while at the same time presenting them in a modern idiom to which the reader can relate - even more than that: Milarepa becomes alive. It is as if he is saying all of this, at least this is what I can hear. For anyone interested in the practice aspects of Buddhist yoga and its everyday application, I can only recommend this book highly. It is a cherished addition to my library.

I wonder, what Milarepa what say about all this Rinpoches today ;)
Wearing golden watches, behaving like big meditation masters, but having spent no time at all with hard practice in silence like he did.But still calling Milarepa as o ancestor of their tradition.I think he would kick them out.
