Works great for human urine specimens
I'm a clin lab scientist and quite familiar with assays for specific gravity. This works as expected for human urine specimens. That was the only scale I used.

Refractometer that measures cat's and dog's urine concentration (urine specific gravity)
This refractometer is intended for measuring the urine specific gravity (USG) for cats and dogs. It is not for testing the saline level of a home aquarium. In case you wonder why there are two scales for cats and dogs - refractometer measures the refraction of light from air to water, which then correlate that measurement to a USG value based on the chemistry tables of the species (cats or dogs). Calibration is easy (the included instruction has wrong picture of the scales, but you get the idea), measurement is simple, and the USG values correctly reflect my dog and my cat's current health. If your cat has kidney disease or renal failure, measuring USG is the a free test that can be easily done at home and it offers valuable insight into your kitty's kidney health. Cat should have value greater than 1.040. Low USG means less concentrated urine (likely due to kidney failure).

Un must-have
