Ubu Roi for Contemporary America
I saw this performed in 2006 or 2007 and it blew me away. I had never read or seen Ubu Roi by Jarry, so I had no context for it. Over the years I got interested in Jarry and came to love Ubu Roi (especially the radio play of it by Pere Ubu).I recently went back and read Fatboy for the first time. I usually dislike reading plays, but this really grabbed me. It's a kick in the pants, just like the live performance. Although obviously taking its cue from Ubu Roi, it's not simply derivative. Fatboy is the legitimate American incarnation of Jarry's monster. This play could be performed with Fatboy in a Donald Trump costume. It would be perfect for our times.
