As an English teacher, I can't live without this book. For many English speakers, it is difficult to explain some of the more esoteric points of grammar. In my experience, I've found that most grammar books are too basic, are filled with lots of unnecessary grammar exercises, or are difficult to use. This book, however, is easy to use and is created for the English teaching professional rather than for the English student. It's a breeze to check up on difficult points. All of the grammar points are listed in alphabetical order in an encyclopedic manner. In my teaching career, I've been asked many difficult questions that were difficult for me to answer. Every time, Swan's Practical English Usage came to my rescue. Every English teacher should have a copy of this one.

This is the bible for the TEFL educator. This is the most complete guide I've ever seen. Not only because of the amount of information it has, but how it's organized. You can find the answer to what you're looking for very quickly by using the index and alphabetized organization of the book. I learn a lot about the English language from the students' questions. This is the ultimate reference guide, because it not only provides the answers, but provides the explanation for the answer. Must have for the TESOL/TEFL instructor.

I purchased this book at the beginning of this year, and I have used it very often. I study English as a second language, whereby I have the tendency to get to the bottom of it. Up to now, the book has answered all of my questions. The book is very well organized, and subjects are easy to find. Furthermore, it covers about everything you want to know about grammar and style. Among the enormous collection of books you find in the bookstore, this one is its money more than worth.

I bought this for my Cambridge CELTA course because all the instructors raved about it and asked us to reference it on a regular basis -- Frankly, I'm unimpressed with this book. It's nothing more than a big fat dictionary of grammatical terms with some cross-referencing at best. It is not designed to teach you or have you practise grammar structures.

The detailed explanation of the book was clear and exact. I am Teaching English as a foreign Language and this book is invaluable and good to have as a reference book. English Language is very complex and one cannot always remember all the reasons for certain constructions and how to explain them to foreign students. This book went far beyond my expectations.

These is a GREAT grammatical refernce book. If you plan on teaching English, this book is a must have.

As a writer and teacher of EFL English this book is invaluable. If you're learning new vocabulary and grammar usage this is the book for you. Michael Swan is one of my favourite academics. His books are easy to read and comprehend with a well though out layout. A great book!

Touches on features of the english language which can be difficult to explain to students.very useful in combination with other texts.

I bought this book to help me to give solid and easy to understand grammar explanations to my students, and it does just that. It has provided me with sound reinforcement of my own knowledge of English grammar rules, particularly regarding things that I was struggling to explain beforehand. I'm very pleased I bought this book, and is one of the few grammar books that I refer to regularly.
