Complex concepts in a totally understandable form - excellent
I'm a big fan of Joseph's publications. Always clear and he has a skill in discussing and explaining concepts - sometimes complicated - in ways which suit my brain much better than most authors in similar offerings. The topics are structured in a way which lends themselves to a workable practice routine, which is often difficult to prioritise and structure. This title attacks a subject which often seems like a black art and turns it into something approachable and usable without dumbing it down.Keep them coming please Joseph.

A must read for anyone looking to improve their chord knowledge!
Great book.It gets to the point. This book is really helping me understand HOW to use all the weird and wonderful chords in progressions. particularly the different voicings and how they are built/shaped. A must read for anyone looking to improve their chord knowledge

Another excellent, clear and progressive explanation of chords extending part 1 really nicely. Great to see an explanation of why as well as how. Highly recommended, looking forward to volume 3

Excellent Series of Books
I have a number of the books in the Joseph Alexander series, mainly the jazz related ones. They are all superb with helpful backing tracks.

Excellent material for an aspiring/working musician
As with most other books of Joseph, this is also a nicely paced book, easy to read and play along. I would highly recommend it to intermediate players who are stuck in a rut with chord shapes and voicings and want to get more out of their chordal playing. It is not a must to start out with the first part of this book (this is part-2) unless you are a stickler for such modalities (though there are a few references to Part-1 like the "Diminished Substitution"). The book starts off on an even keel introducing you to Drop 2 voicings and the shapes that need to be gripped first in group 1 and then later in group 2 and 3 string sets on the guitar (G1 = strings 1,2,3,4) (G2 = strings 2,3,4,5) (G3 = strings 3,4,5,6), or what can be called as the Top, Middle and Bass string sets. The interesting things are the exercises he uses to practise playing the inversions like "connecting the inversions with walking bass lines from scales", "skipping inversions", "practising in P4's, P5's" etc. He goes through the four basic chord types (Min7, Dom7, Min7b5 and Maj7) before going to alterations and extensions. He then deals with Drop 3 and Drop 2+4 voicings. I liked the Cyclic Exercises that he mentions at the end for practising these chord families (and shapes) well. In fact these are recommended exercises in any chapter. He rounds it by addressing the other four basic chord types at the end i.e. (minMaj7, Dim7, Min6 and Maj6), and the different ways of viewing these chords. All in all, a great book!

You need this book.
Its no secret, jazz guitar is all about chord voicings. If you are an intermediate or advanced student of jazz guitar, you need this book. Once mastered, the outlined technique will allow you to play all the chords for any progression within the confines of a 4 or 5 fret area of the guitar neck. No more jumping from one are of the fretboard to another25 Major ii V I Licks for Jazz Guitar. (25 Guitar Licks for...). The exercises are carefully planned to allow a gradual, natural absorption of the theory and technique required to play any and all jazz chord voicings. 25 Major ii V I Licks for Jazz Guitar. (25 Guitar Licks for...)

Extremely useful!
The clearest, most systematic chord book I know. I wish I had this book much earlier. Be prepared for a lot of time studying to absorb this material.

Good technically... a bit dry on teaching style...
I am sure the author is a great player, but, although the info in this text is technically accurate, I didn't find his teaching methods particularly enthralling (example: here's 4 different ways to play the same jazz chord - now play all 4 several times [until you eyes fall out]....), instead of mixing a little theory (here's an interesting jazz chord sequence) with real-life examples (let's use that sequence and play this popular jazz number - see how it applies). If you want to learn jazz guitar from a book, wait until you find a guy whose teaching style really appeals to you. If you like this one, buy it - price is great. Personally, for example, I learned to fingerpick from a guy (I never met) with a website, where he lays out everything step-by-step, with diagrams and sound bites. Awesome. I found 'the guy'. I haven't found 'the guy' yet who can teach me jazz guitar.

This is a great introduction to jazz chord construction and theory
I am only beginning my journey to learn jazz guitar, and I recently came across the Fundamental Changes books. After checking out the samples here on Amazon I went ahead and bought this one. I have only scratched the surface of what this book has to offer, and I have already learned about chord voicings, some basic progressions, and alternate ways to construct chords. I may need to go back and learn some more basic theory about chords, but I have been able to understand what I've encountered in this book up to now. I highly recommend this title if you're looking to move into jazz guitar. There many other books in the Fundamental Changes series, and I'm sure that I'll buy more of them as I progress.
