Mythologica: Beasts to Color

Your browser does not support HTML5 video. This is a beautifully drawn book of 31 mythological creatures. The publishing of the book is also well done. The range of creatures included is fairly extensive and, at the end of this review, I will provide a full list of the mythological creatures included. The creatures represent myths and stories from a wide variety of cultures.The initial line drawings are realistically portrayed but then the inside of the mythological creatures are many “doodle” style intricate elements. The designs are detailed and highly intricate with many small and hard to color details. It may not be the best book for those who have vision or fine motor skill issues.The attached cover is beautifully illustrated with coloring and light touches of purple and blue metallic foil on the front artwork. The paper that is used for this book is a very good quality and would work well if you wish to frame your finished work.Slight elements of the background design are already colored. While my personal preference would have been to have left these blank, I am okay with the small amount they have colored in this instance. The designs do merge into the binding and you will lose portions of some of the designs if you remove a page at the perforations but nothing essential to the integrity of the design.This is what I found in coloring and testing in this book:31 Mythological inspired designs which are very detailed and intricate to colorPrinted on one side of the pagePaper is white, heavy weight slightly rough, has background elements slightly pre-colored and is perforated.Sewn BindingBook can be opened fairly flat for coloringMost designs merge past the perforations and into the binding area; however, these portions are not integral to the overall design.Alcohol and Water based markers bleed through this paper to some extent (Tombow brush ends did best with only light spotting to the back of the page.)India ink left shadows on the back of the page.Gel pens did not bleed through and did not require extra drying time.Coloring pencils worked well. Both oil and wax based pencils worked well for providing good pigment. I was able to layer the same color for deeper tones, layer multiple colors and to blend easily using a pencil style blending stick.If you use a wet medium with this book, I suggest using a blotter page of card stock or several sheets of paper to keep ink from seeping through the ruining the pages below. You can also simply remove a page from the book before coloring as well.Designs in this book include: Minotaur, European Dragon, Jackalope, Basilisk, Gorgon, Cockatrice, Yeti, Pegasus, Ogre, Kraken, Gnome, Hydra, Harpy, Qilin, Kitsune, Unicorn, White Stag, Sphinx, Goblin, Griffon, Faun, Phoenix, Chinese Dragon, Mermaid, Troll, Werewolf, Fairy, Manticore, Centaur, Sea Serpent and Cerberus.

Just received today and I must say, I was really really disappointed. The quality of the picture very poor quality. The only reason I gave 3 stars is the quality of the paper is very good.Not worth the price!Update:Finished 1 picture completely, and almost done with my 2nd picture. I adore the 2 pictures but still not fond of most of the pictures in this book. Maybe I will have change of heart.UPDATE:I have to say I do love this coloring book. I haven't put it down, (family made me stop coloring doing the holidays). Still not happy with a lot of the pics but I believe after I start coloring I will change my mind again. Some pics posted not completed but wait to share.

I have a lot of coloring books but sometimes you just want something different. This is it! The paper is of good quality. Pages are perforated making them easy to tear out, if you want. I have only used colored pencils and gel pens thus far and both work very well. Some reviews do not like the little colored touches added by artist. This does not bother me nor does it take away from the picture. In fact, it is helpful for me, as a beginning colorist, in deciding a color scheme. The pictures are detailed but covers the whole page making your end product a work of art and perfect for framing, if you so desire. I notice on back of book that there are 3 more books in this format. I will be purchasing them and adding them to my collection.

Not the normal adult coloring book I buy but this is FANTASTIC!!! Amazing illustrations wonderfully detailed and I LOVE the mythological theme! Great paper, has a wonderful tooth to it that works great with colored pencils and gel pens. Every design is one sided and perforated if you want to take it out, which I will do as soon as I finish the Medusa, my favorite! After getting this book I'm now looking into buying all of their books!

Bought this for a friend and he loved it! He has been having a tough time with the death of his father, the pandemic, and his brother being gravely ill. This book will provide welcome stress relief and a creative outlet.

This is the second copy of this book i’ve bought. The pictures are great - detailed enough to be challenging and they turn out beautiful

Beautiful book, interesting illustrations but page 'perforation' means that once opened, the pages stant to fall out instantly. Very disappointing. Have all other books from the series but this publication was a big disappointment as it seemed cheaper than the rest (despite the same pricepoint at the time of purchase).

Fantastic book, very relaxing to colour in the pictures with a good range from simple (for adults) to quite intricate. Would 100% recommend for someone who wants a good selection of mythical pictures as I didn’t want a book specifically on fairies or dragons which is the majority of the market.

This is my third book by Richard Merritt, every one of his books are high quality in every way.Love the time I spend with these books.

Pictures are beautiful, good quality paper.
