first impression
First impression for this book: The two colors used for the worksheets are black and deep pink. The paper for the worksheets feels cheaper than I expected. Not sure how easily it will hold up to erasing. As far as content, we have only looked at this book (Book F) and the first page had a short reading with a picture of an alien on it that did not appeal to my son at all. The cover is red/purple with a picture of someone on a mountain bike- the inside does not seem to have any correlation. Some images seem designed for very young children and an older child would see this as a bit babyish. Then again, the alien picture was not babyish at all. Just strange.I also agree with another reviewer that the use of a cursive spelling list is not conducive to recognizing correct spelling since there are no books written in cursive, nor is most other correspondence they will need to write (type) going to be in cursive. It would be more helpful for them to see the word spelled out in the same format they will encounter it. If we use this book, we will work using manuscript print. As far as academic content I am sure if we use it it will give good practice and instruction in spelling, the reviews I read before buying were good. We are just disappointed with the format. I was specifically looking for something more interesting for my son so we could get some extra practice in during the summer months, but he is not interested in this book at all. :(

A spelling error in a spelling book?
On page 112, under "Proofreading Marks," it says "captial" instead of "capital." Maybe this will be or has been corrected in a newer edition. We had a good laugh. Yes, I know it is a minor error, but given that it is a book on spelling, it's kinda funny.Other than that, the Spelling Workout series are good. Self-explanatory so it's good for busy homeschooling families. Pretty repetitive and uninspiring, and the paper is of low quality. But spelling is one of the easiest subjects in our home, so it's no big deal.

Wish weekly words werent soley in cursive
While I like the earlier levels C & D, levels E &F only offer the spelling lists in cursive. I wish they offered the print and cursive weekly words. There are very few books that are written in cursive. I apprecaite that they show you the cursive version though. The paper quality isnt very great, but its managable. I appreciate the price and that the lessons are only a few pages.

Homeschool necessity
Our 4th and 5th graders work on these books daily. Challenging in just the right way. They are improving with their spelling with 6 months of using this series.

Engaging material for learning (5th-6th grade)
Great spelling book. My daughter actually enjoys doing these books. Each page has a different way to study the words for the lesson.

Great spelling workbooks!
We love these spelling books! The layout is great for introducing words and reinforcing them with the activities. My son is 10 and we started with book F for reference. Will definitely order more.

Excellent spelling workbooks.
We have been using the Modrpern Curriculum Press Soelling Workout books for six years in our home school and highly recommend them. I do have my kids write the list words three times Monday-Thursday in a spiral and then test on Friday.

Perfect spelling program for natural spellers who need to keep working on spelling!
SWO is the most effective and efficient spelling program out there for natural spellers who need to keep working on their spelling. The key to making this program successful is making sure that your child READS and UNDERSTANDS (or memorizes if necessary) the Tips for each of the lessons. These are critical to kids understanding the spelling rules. If your child struggles with spelling, I wouldn't recommend this program - there are many others out there that can remediate spelling - this isn't one. You can do 1 lesson/week by doing a pre-test on Monday (let them briefly review the words first and read the story that opens up the lesson), then complete the 3 pages of work over the course of a week, and finally finish on Friday with a final test. We have the kids skip any lessons where they get perfect on the pre-test :)
