This reconstructed Easter Mass consists exclusively of compositions by Praetorius following the Wolfenbéttel Church Constitution of 1569-a document that enables US to experience an Easter Mass in the order and with the parts that it would have celebrated during Praetorius' term as chapel master. A finely elaborated concept! This CD inaugurates the first of 4 albums in a new CPO series entitled Renaissance in the North.

Not as good as other mass reconstructions...
I can't comment on artist quality, not being myself a conoisseur or musician, but just an amateur. Suffice it to say I didn't hear anything that sounded like a wrong note, noise, or overly stylized singing. I enjoyed the compositional ideas by Praetorius in this reconstructed mass. One important detail that seems to be omitted is the Gospel chant, which is strange since the Epistle is chanted right after the Collect on track 4. I don't think Wolfenbüttel's church order would have allowed for the Gospel to be omitted on Easter (if at all). Otherwise it is nice to hear everything including the hymns and liturgical chant. For a superb reconstructed Praetorius mass, I recommend the Mass for Christmas Morning. Praetorius: Mass for Christmas Morning
