Life Sentence

As a lifelong Metal fan I pride myself on knowing the odd bit of music trivia and many little known bands from the past, but I had never heard of Satan.Satan was apparently part of the NWOBHM, released an album in 1983 then faded into obscurity... That is until 2013! I saw their reunion album on Terrorizer Magazine's top 50 releases of last year and decided to pick it up. I was blown away.Terrorizer said Life Sentence was "a contender for best reformation album ever" and they weren't joking. The band sounds like they were cryogenicly frozen during the early 1980s and thawed out of hibernation to record this album some three decades later.Satan boasts all of its original members who play and sound like they're in their 20s when logic dictates they are 30+ years past that! The twin guitar leads are fast, precise, nuanced and while drawing favorable comparisons to Iron Maiden, are uniquely Satan. The drumming and bass-work is superb and I swear the singer could have gone down as one of Metal's best had the band not vanished for thirty years!A remarkable story and an amazing album.Hail Satan!

When I saw there was a reunion CD from the NWOBHM Satan, that got great reviews, I figured it would be worth picking up. I had what I believe are both of their prior CD's from decades ago, as well as releases from the portion of the band that morphed into Pariah, and of course the members that went on to create Skyclad had a very special place in my heart. But none of that prepared me for how magnificent this album was and how it blew me away. It had the strong melodies of NWOBHM, absolutely incredible song writing in both the vocal melodies and the incredible guitar runs, and yet it had more intensity. Every tune had both guitar leads that wouldn't let you go, and a passionate, powerful vocal chorus that became instantly memorable. For those who love classic and melodic metal of any form, this one is a must buy!!!

I have been a fan of SATAN since the 1980s. Their "Court in the Act" album was a perfect blend of melodic speed metal. I wore out several cassette tapes before picking up their album on CD in the early 2000's.Imagine my happiness in seeing them united again, blasting out their inimitable act like they never left. Brian Ross sounds EXACTLY like he did in 1983!LIFE SENTENCE consists of 10 tracks. Contrary to other reviewers, mine arrived with a genuine pressed CD and not a CD-R. It was packaged very nicely with a sleeve outside the jewel case with SATAN's artwork emblazoned beautifully around it on both sides.For a blast to the past catch "Tears of Blood" or "Another Universe". If you are a fan of melodic 80's speed metal, pick up this album. You won't be disappointed.

Resurrected and revived, they put out one stellar NWOBHM release to pick up right where they left off. Every song is memorable and will keep you rocking in your car seat pushing that pedal to the floor. Can't wait to see them live.

Here is the best old school heavy metal album released in a very long time. The band plays a very fast nwobhm style, with just a hint of punk influence. They started in the early 80s and they're definitely stuck in the past in the best way possible. If you love old school heavy metal this album will have you pumping your fist, singing along and going and getting your denim jacket out of storage. I cannot recommend this album enough and it's going to be a classic. It's a bit early, but its a safe bet this is one of the best metal albums of 2013, if not the best.

Every song is memorable and nostalgic of early 1980s heavy metal. Great riffs, solos, vocals, drums, and audible bass. The replay value is off the charts and there's zero filler.Favorite tracks: Siege Mentality, Twenty Twenty Five, Cenotaph, Incantations; but I can listen to all of the songs over and over again.The badassery of the band logo and the menacing cover art alone sell this album, but the songs are all amazing. This is my metal album of the year for 2013!

Very happy with my purchase

I liked this album the first time I heard it, but after multiple listenings I absolutely love it. At first I compared it to early Mercyful Fate, which is not inappropriate, but with the resurgence of thrash and speed metal I find myself comparing it more to the likes of Hirax and other contenders in that arena.I'm not going to wax contemplative on this, other than to say that if you love early MF but want something a bit faster, and are tired of bands that don't know that good music is all about the songwriting, then check this out. These guys have made the best speed/thrash metal album of the '10s.Let me just throw out as a closer, if you love early MF as I do, the absolutely most bitchin' album of the new millennium is 'Final Sacrifice' by Noctum. More of an occult atmospheric aspect to the metal than what Satan offers, much like the original masters.

Als es hieß, daß sich Satan reformiert hatten, war die Aufregung meinerseits groß. Ich durfte sie dann im Court-In-The-Act-Line-Up auf dem Metal Assault 2012 bewundern, und fragte mich, ob das nun nur so ein Festival-Reunion-Ding war oder ob die Herren auch nochmal neuen Output veröffentlichen würden.Und Gottseidank - sie haben es getan!Was schon auf dem Festivalauftritt auffiel - daß die Mannen lediglich ihre Großtaten von Court In The Act zum Besten gaben - ist auch auf dieser Scheibe Programm. Der progressivere, düsterere und etwas thrashigere Stil von Suspended Sentence scheint nie gewesen zu sein. Life Sentence klingt wie Court In The Act, von der ersten bis zur letzten Note - und darüber bin ich auch froh.So gut Satans Output nach dem Debutalbum auch gewesen sein mag, so viel rauher und kraftvoller der Sänger darauf im Vergleich zu Brian Ross auch gewesen sein mag und so sehr sich die Band damals weiterentwickelt haben mag, die Musik hatte nie wieder denselben Charme, wie auf Court In The Act.Und jetzt, wo die Herren sich in der damaligen Besetzung reformiert haben, ändert sich das endlich!Time To Die zeigt schon zu Beginn, wo es langgeht: Rasende Speed-Metal-Riffs, Melodien, wie sie nur für Satan typisch sind, schnelles Drumming und Brian Ross' charakteristischer Gesang, der - obwohl gewöhnungsbedürftig - einfach besser passt, als das rauhe Gebelle seines damaligen Nachfolgers. Ein Opener, der eines Satan-Albums würdig ist und in die gleiche Kerbe schlägt wie seinerzeit "Trial By Fire".Jeder Song, der folgt, erinnert an damals, und wie damals schaffen die Mannen es, Abwechslung einzubringen, so daß die Scheibe nie langweilig wird. Und trotz aller Huldigung an frühere Glanztaten baut die Band auch neue Elemente ein - so etwa Brian Ross' mehrstimmige Gesänge in "Twenty Twenty Five", oder sogar balladeske Klänge in "Another Universe".Trotzdem überwiegen die rockigen, richtig old schooligen Heavy Metal Klänge, und Granaten wie "Siege Mentality", das schon genannte "Time To Die", oder der Titeltrack "Life Sentence" lassen das Herz des Fans der alten Schule höher schlagen.Auch produktionstechnisch hat man nicht auf einen ultramodernen Sound gesetzt, das Album kann selbst in der Produktion an den Charme des Debuts anknüpfen - wenngleich natürlich alles ein wenig sauberer und besser klingt.Die alten Hasen zeigen, daß sie es noch draufhaben, und so mancher Newcomer könnte sich hiervon eine Scheibe abschneiden.Klar könnte man sagen, sie haben ja nichts wirklich Neues geschaffen. Bedenkt man aber, daß sie eine der ersten Bands dieser Richtung waren, daß ihr Sound sowieso immer einzigartig war und es Jahrzehnte keine Scheibe eben DIESER Machart mehr gegeben hat, dann wird einem vielleicht bewusst, daß man hier den würdigen Nachfolger eines der wahren Meisterwerke der 80er in Händen hält.Und hört man sich das Album an, meint man, es wäre eher nur ein Jahr vergangen seit damals, und nicht 30...

Die alten SATAN Scheiben gehören in jede anständige Heavy Metal Sammlung und gehörten trotz hervorragender technischer Fähigkeiten und einer guten Mischung aus Melodie und Tempo zur härteren Seite der NWOBHM. Auf dem Comeback Album "Life Sentence" zeigen sie in puristischem Sound, dass sie von der damaligen Klasse nix, aber auch gar nix verloren haben und hauen sich einen Hit nach dem andern raus, die dank der tollen Twin-Leads noch an Intensität hinzugewinnen. Spitze!

Bon, j'avoue, je ne connaissais pas forcément ce groupe qui pourtant comme à avoir de l'âge !!Etant bien curieux, et après avoir lu plusieurs bonnes critiques... je me suis dis pourquoi pas ?Finalement je ne suis vraiment pas déçu, c'est un super album, des riffs en pagaille, une production que je trouve au top mais on retrouve un esprit thrash / heavy des 80's. C'est assez difficile à expliquer mais je trouve cet album excellent, il tourne en boucle. Je vais m'intéresser de près à la discographie du groupe !
