Peter The Great Humbled: The Russo-Ottoman War Of 1711 (Century of the Soldier)

Disaster On The Pruth
Author Nick Dorrell continues his books on the Great Northern War (and I follow behind) with a history of the little-known Pruth campaign that saw Peter The Great potentially come to as disastrous an end as Charles XII had done at Poltava, cut off and surrounded. Dorrell covers not only the Pruth but the whole Russo-Ottoman War of 1711. Ranging in the east from the Kirghiz summoned to help the Russians, the Krim Tartars who raided into the Ukraine and sent troops to support the Sublime Porte's Balkan armies. Peters forces pushing towards Moldavia and Wallachia faced exotica like the rump Swedish army that had escaped after Poltava and Polish troops loyal to Stanisław Leszczyński, former king of Poland. The reasons Peter escaped disaster are sensibly suggested. A very useful book

good art work and nice pictures of Russian re-enactors
Tolerable; good art work and nice pictures of Russian re-enactors. Not that much new info for people really into the GNW etc but still a nice addition to the library and good for new comers to the period and wanting war gaming info: Can tell it's been translated from the Russian but hey ho - not bad all told. :-)

Excellent work on an often overlooked aspect of the GNW
Well put together and informative. To Amazon's credit, this did actually arrive on time with none of the 'warehouse issues'.

Well written and illustrated book on one of the first Russo Turkish wars
A fair offering from Helion, with my usual caveat of poor proof reading on Helion’s part to the extent that there is a proof reading error in the Chronology section at the beginning of the book, and it goes on from there. I feel that I should not have read this book immediately after reading The Russian Army of The Great Northern War from the same publisher which I am sure will become THE standard work for the English Speaking world at least and to which I compared it. That said, the subject matter is interesting and the author has a particularly well discussed section on the numbers involved in the campaign. It is well laid out in approach and is to be recommended.

Superb guide to the Russo-Ottoman War of 1711
This is a superb book on the disastrous war in the Balkans between the Russian and Ottoman Empires. There is a shortage of books in English on this subject (Great Northern War and related campaigns) so this is a worthwhile addition to the range of available books. Nicholas Dorrell is well-known as an author for this subject and he covers the armies and campaigns well with orders of battles, uniform details and campaign analysis. There are some excellent plates of uniforms by Maksim Borisov. Also colour plates of Russian reenactors are used to illustrate the Russian side. Depicted in illustration are the impressive array of troop types involved, Cossacks, Moldavians, Walachians, Swedes, and Poles. If you are thinking of wargaming this campaign then this book will be the book to get. Recommended.
