"Le Deuxieme Souffle" directed by Jean Pierre Melville has a brilliant story. That story is from the 1958 novel "Le Deuxieme Souffle" by José Giovanni. I love to watch French films from the Fifties and Sixties (or at least the better ones) and had been promising myself to watch this film for the last seven years or so, after watching the re-make of the 1966 film. As well as having a great story, the film has a great cast. great director, and a cool soundtrack. The cinematography is less remarkable - I've watched worse from this era but also have seen much better. If you enjoy French gangster films from the 1960's then this is a film you might well want to check out. The DVD that I watched of "Le Deuxieme Souffle" was a Korean import. The transfer of the film onto DVD might not have been very good and maybe my comments about the cinematography are unfair - but I don't know. The images that are shown fill only three-quarters of the screen approximately. You can try enlarging the image but you might not be able to see the subtitles if you need them. As film re-makes often have little or nothing to offer that is better the original (in my opinion) I was a little surprised to find that with "Le Deuxieme Souffle" , the original was much inferior to the remake. I wouldn't want to dissuade anyone from watching the 1966 film but I'd say that if you were to watch only one of the two films then I would definitely be suggesting that the 2007 film would be a better choice.
