Good resource but poorly edited
This is one of the best resources I've found to work with scholastic players. I've tried Coakley's books (which are excellent), but they're mostly too difficult for relatively new players. Chess Tactics for Students is a perfect primer for newer and younger players, as the problems are all fairly simple and straightforward. I also like how the book splits up all the various tactics into themes, instead of jumbling them all together. Don't get me wrong, I think mixed-bag tactics books are fine, but I think it helps younger and newer players to be able to see many repetitions of the same theme.I have two main problems with this book. First, it's rather poorly edited. There are several typos (which can be a big problem in a chess book), and several mistakes in the diagrams. In one problem, for example, white has two queens and no king. Most of these problems, however, are minor. I've also found one problem that lists an inferior move as a solution. The move it lists is still good, but when a student pointed out to me what looked like a better move than the solution given, I checked it with an engine and found he was correct. I've probably checked two dozen of the problems against the engine, though, and have only found this one error. My second problem is that there are only two problems per page. This makes the book worthless for classroom reproduction, unless you feel like spending several hours with some creative cutting and pasting. I'm sure this was an intentional move by the publisher, but it's still annoying! I ended up having to buy a whole classroom set. I've found other tactics workbooks that don't have this problem, but I've unfortunately (for my pocketbook) found Bain's book more useful for my students.
