Before the Philadelphia Style Pillbox cap of 1910, the body of which had 3 or 4 rows of colored piping, the effect of the piping was created by folding the fabric of the cap over itself. A labor intensive process, baseball cap manufacturers quickly moved to using a slim braid known as soutache to create the same effect. But the handsome tailored effect of the French seam gives the cap an enduring quality well beyond its 20 year history
