Hopeless
Alter Ego A2 is used by Alliance France to help teach French. Alliance France is an organisation which teaches French in many different countries and this book is used to teach students who are classed as at the upper end of Intermediate and the lower end of Proficient under the Common European Framework for Language i.e. the top end of A2 and the low end of B1 under the CEFL categories. This book is very difficult to follow and to understand for a student working alone. The book lacks focus, clarity and step wise progression which is what you would expect in an intermediate language book. For example you would expect to see increasing levels of difficulty chapter by chapter regarding phraseology, vocabulary and grammar. Unfortunately this book delivers none of that and has the effect of making you feel abandoned in a language jungle with few supplies and no compass! In short this book may work in a classroom setting but as a stand alone book it's completely hopeless.

Somewhat disappointing
No English at all and only one CD - bit sneaky because you need two

Not for false beginners
I think this book is good for people who have been learning French for a while and who are looking for some interesting articles to read. However, as I didn't buy the book for this purpose, I am disappointed overall. I was looking for a book to use with (some very able) students who did GCSE French some time ago and thought that this 'false beginners' book would be either at the right level, if not slightly easy. However, I haven't been able to use it yet as the texts are too demanding. Also, the topics are all quite discursive and there aren't any role-play topics such as ordering food in a restaurant or asking for directions etc which is frustrating.
