A Gem!
Xu Bing plays with expectations and perspective. This book presents familiar childhood songs in a format that at first is bewildering. When the structure of the text becomes apparent, these forms suddenly make sense. The book brings the joy of discovery, especially if you pour over the text before looking at the "code" in the back of the book. Delightful!

Songs in code
Not quite sure what the purpose of this book is with the pseudo Chinese characters with American Folk songs? Will be interesting to see how the young recipient responds to it.

This is a great introduction to the Asian character-based languages, so readers can see that the codes do make sense. Agreed, it does take some getting used to, but knowing that the texts are familiar songs (information given in the Top Secret Assignment) helps. This book is also one way of showing students that not all languages use the English/Latin Alphabet, but with some practice, they can read this character alphabet
