The oldest complete board game ever discovered was found inside the Royal tombs at the ancient Sumerian city of Ur in Mesopotamia. Ur of the Chaldees is mentioned in the Bible and the tombs were built more than 5000 years ago. The name of the game isn't known and so it has become known as 'The Royal Game of Ur'. No-one knows how the game was played but many games historians have used various pieces of evidence to conjecture rules, most notably Irving Finkel, the inimitable British Museum games specialist who broke new ground by deciphering a cuneiform tablet with rules for the game from a later era. A set of proposed rules is included within the game. But if more ideas are needed, we at Masters Traditional Games take such matters very seriously and have published 3 variations of the simple race game in the rules section of our website. An attractive and stylish version of the Royal Game of Ur. The board is made from solid wood of the Pinewood family, but is denser and heavier than normal Pine. This version of the the oldest board game ever found is based on the original board displayed at the British Museum. This famous version of the game was found inside the Royal tombs at the ancient Mesopotamiam city of Ur, now Iraq. This version of the game features a wonderfully finished board with real aesthetic beauty. The patterns, decorations and colors all compliment each other remarkably well, making the set truly distinctive and undeniably stylish. It includes solid wooden playing pieces - in light and dark wood, 4 pyramid dice and a complete set of rules. Please note that the rules included with this game are designed to work with three pyramidal binary dice. However, we have included an extra fourth die, so the game can be played with the four dice rules.Language of Rules/Instructions: EnglishApprox. dimensions: Board - 9.1x3.5x1 inch, weight - 8ozProduct Ref.: 00K275

Highest quality UR game available
I had a few different versions of UR. They were all typically home-made versions of the game that had some concession in quality. This one is made on a solid block of wood. it's cut to shape. The printing is only on the outer surfaces of the board leading me to believe the printing was likely done with a commercial inkjet printer or, more likely, a screen printing machine. The designs and colors are great, but they are limited to just black and red. The inner sides of the board (where the board narrows to one column) are not printed. Likely because the printing method can not get down into these areas. The bottom of the board is not printed, but does not need to be printed. The board is finished in a thin lacquer that provides an elegant look and feel. Board is solid wood all the way through providing a nice sound and feel when playing. This board is better than the WE Games edition board in that the surface of the play area is flat. In playing the game you're constantly sliding game pieces on and off the board. The flat surface makes this easy. The pieces are wooden with a hand-made look and feel to them provided by small imperfections. Dots in the middle are not super clean or dead center. This is actually a plus as it really makes it look nice. The dice are not commercially made dice and have the hand-made feel to them as well. The white "pips" on the corners are clearly just a glob of white (or possibly silver) paint that was put on there. Aesthetically this looks great, but the dice seem to be made of pine wood. So they're a bit light. You could always use commercially available D4 dice and and just paint a couple pips on them if you wanted something more substantial. My game came in an unmarked black box. No markings anywhere. Inside the box is n instruction booklet that is fantastic. Goes over many of the more popular variations to the game's rules as well as some of the history behind them.In short this is an exceptionally well-made and beautiful edition of the game.

Step aside backgammon, this game is superior in every way.
This game comes with multiple versions, but we found the J Masters to be the best with 5 pieces each rolling three dice each turn, the rolls being: (one dot = 1, two dots = 2, three dots = 3, zero dots = 4), that way players always get to move something, and are also rewarded with a 4 from their first move onto the board by landing on a rosette. We liked the J Masters version the best since it keeps the spacing between rosettes at a consistent 4, and it allows players to prevent the other from bearing off just at the end, making the game more complex (and exciting) than a sprint down the middle to get to safety. We've played with 4-6 pieces as well with same rules as above and it works very well, even if someone has significantly more pieces that completed the track.

Ancient game- very intriguing
This game is totally intriguing. I love the idea of playing such an ancient game. Some of the variations change the feel and complexity of the game in ways that add to its mystique. The board itself is well made, but lighter than I thought. The game pieces are very light and rather small. The painted tips on the dice are hard to see and rub off fairly easily. Overall, the game is great and good quality. I was a little surprised at how small the overall game board was as well. The price seems a little much for the size of the game, but worth experience to play.

Board is good looking, but that's about it
The Royal Game of Ur is fun to play and easy to learn, just don't get this particular board/pieces.The paint on the tips of the dice wear off quickly with regular play, the storage box arrived damaged at the corners, there's no section within the board to store the chips/dice, and the light chips are just quickly painted on unlike the dark chips that have a divot in the center for paint.

Great looking Set, Nice Quality
This arrived today from the UK and I am very impressed with the look and feel of the game. None of the pieces feel cheap and the instructions are easy to understand. I would purchase from this vendor again.

Exciting and Competitive Game
This game is great. I saw the Irving Finkel, Youtube video of the game and had to get one. This game board is well constructed and appears to be screen printed, so the coloration is sure to last. It came with 4 dice and 14 game pieces, (7 of each color). It's a must have, if you like board games.

A very handsome replica of a very ancient game. Great fun to play. No wonder it was a popular game for 3,000 years
