The very first chapter that addresses love in general was good but a warning about the rest of the book that I overlooked. The next chapter hooks you with a very engaging account of her first experience of meeting an 'arranged' prospective husband. These chapters set the tone for the rest of the book. Love in a Headscarf is at its best when Janmohamed finds ways to seamlessly integrate lessons about her experiences as a Muslim with the value of tolerance and diversity. It is at its worst when she preaches or when she rambles on and on about spiritual thoughts that only make sense in her head. In the end I skipped a lot of pages as I read the novel and struggled to get to the end. Since I wanted to find out how it all ends, I skipped even more of her rambling starry spiritual ruminations and was glad to move on to the next book.

Conveys the lighthearted fun of being a modern muslim woman
I was reticent to this book because the description and title seemed kind of trite and flippant. But I bought the sample and it was exceedingly well written and the first piece of writing that conveyed a light hearted joyous side of muslim woman experience. The character is excited about her first meeting with the family of a prospective (arranged marriage) husband, the way a young girl might be excited about a quincinera or any kind of party. In addition to an enjoyable read on a joyous perspective of practicing islam as a woman, the author discusses the difficulty and beauty of relationships - finding them and maintaining them - and how the "societal" discussion of "love" is at odds with or detrimental to people's understanding, acceptance and embrace of what partnership is really about.Only complaint is that the discussion is pretty redundant, but she writes well so it's endurable, and just as she criticizes the movies and magazines for ending the story when the princess finds love, her story too ends at this beginning. But highly recommended and enjoyable read for anyone looking to understand more about the muslim experience.

Great read!
Assalamu Alaikum and hi all. So I thought this book although was definitely geared towards both a Muslim and nonMuslim audience. I think the other did a great job of just being a person and reminding the audience that Muslim women are just people. I did think some of the explanation about Islam got a little tedious not because we don't all need reminders, but it made the book a little harder for me to read because there was so much explanation. I felt that those lengthy explanations took away from the story and led to a kind of rushed ending. All in all, great read. Kudos to the author for putting out a book like this.

I am glad this was one of the required reading books in our UMW!
This book gave me insight into another culture that has been mistreated and misunderstood due to events beyond their control. I learned much about their marriage customs and other facets of their lives and watched Shelina mature past her chronilogical age. It was interesting and informative. I can recommend this book if you are inquisitive about cultural differences and judging all by some people's actions.

Cultural background on the life of a Pakistani Muslim
I enjoyed this book. I read the preview on Kindle and then decided to buy the paperback. I am Muslim, but not Pakistani, so it was interesting to me to read her perspective to the marriage game. It was interesting to hear about all of the horrible meetings, which I think are inevitable. I did like how she came to conclusions about herself and not just about the process. It was an enjoyable read.

Love in a Headscarf
I read the book as a book club selection. Overall, I liked the book. It just took too long for the main character to meet the man that she married, and there was too little said about him. I would recommend the book to anyone in general so that he or she could get an "inside look" of the system of arranged marriage in the Indian/Pakistani culture. I would also recommend the book for people who would be interested in learning something about Islam.

Everyone should read this
This book is a good one for non-Muslims to read and have a better understanding of what Islam is all about. It also discusses the difference between cultural differences and the Koran.
