Classic Frank Thorne edition
Wonderful to see the art again for this classic series, along with early Bruce Jones scripts. This edition does Frank Thorne's art justice and I look forward to purchasing volume 2.

Excellent! With this slight impression that the print could have been a bit more crispy.

Art editions
So I was not really sure what to expect from an art edition book as these things are becoming more and more prevalent within the comic book market. It is a reproduction of the original hand drawn pages of the comics on similar paper stock and size with all the notes written within the borders of the pages representing the comic(s) that were eventually printed. This is a much easier way to get the original art of the comic book but it is still not the original art that would normally cost upwards to thousands of dollars to purchase especially for the complete artwork for a single issue with cover. With this one being fairly discounted when I purchased it I can say that it was worthwhile overall but not something that I am really blown away by.Personally I would rather have the original artwork of the pages then these reproductions, but then again if it was of a comic book series or writer/artist combination that I am a big fan of that might be a different story. Normally these retail for $120 or more to purchase and I believe I was able to get mine for around $80 - $90 with shipping. One artist style edition that I am looking forward to is the Watchmen from IDW Press but have yet to see a price on it. Hopefully amazon will be carrying that one as well.

Beautiful Material in a Classy Package
This is Dynamite's version of the Artist Editions tha t IDW has been releasing for a few years, in which the original inked, black and white art (scanned in color to show the age of the pages and the white out used by the artists) is presented in hardcover form. This is a wonderful item for any fan of comic art, and especially 1970s sword and sorcery, and beautiful strong women. The book is a manageable 12x17.5, so it's not unwieldy to read (like some of the IDW books), and is on stiff paper with a sturdy hard cover. The content is wonderful. Frank Thorne is one of those artists from the 70s Marvel era that you don't always hear alot about, but his work speaks for itself. His version of Red Sonja IS the definitive version of the character, just as John Buscema's version of Conan is the go-to version of that character. It's a wonderful thing that Dynamite published this book, so that more people/generations will be able to discover Frank Thorne's work!

Frank Thorne: Craftsman at Work
Excellent reproductions of the original pages of art by Frank Thorne! As a comic book artist I'm always interested in how other professionals work, but in comparison with others I've collected I'm stunned by how crisp and complete Mr. Thorne's pages are. I've followed his work since he worked on Gold Key comics in the early 60's, and his confident line and use of heavy blacks makes all his compositions stand out. His story telling ability and advancement of the action are a couple of the reasons he is one of the tops in his field. The book is a joy to look at and I plan on purchasing Volumes 2 and 3.
