Taped on April 14, 1983. A visit from Professor Adler is always a treat. On this occasion--sparked by his latest book, "How to Speak and How to Listen"--he reminds us that real conversation doesn't come naturally. We have to work at speaking clearly and listening attentively just as we have to work at writing clearly and reading attentively. Buckley: "What are the responsibilities of the speaker to attract that kind of attention? Should you be able, as a finished listener, to listen to dull people?" Adler: "No, any more than you should be able to read well a bad book." Summary by Firing Line staff.

Listen Closely
This is a tremendous episode of Firing Line. If you value speaking and listening, take close notes. You'll learn a great deal that could make you a more persuasive speaker and intentional listenerโboth invaluable lessons.

How to Have a Conversation
How refreshing to listen to and exchange of views without one person shouting-down the other, but instead listening to the other person and inquiring to understand.

Adler is Exceptional
How to Speak How to Listen is a companion book to the classic work How to Read a Book. These two books have helped me immeasurably when it comes to interacting with thinking people.

A Treasure
I find almost anything that features Mortimer Adler worthwhile to watch and to ponder. His understanding of the how to of acquiring knowledge, and the value of a classical education, is a priceless treasure, now lost to us except through his books and interviews and recorded lectures. This episode of FIRING LINE is acute in having both Adler and Buckley going at it. I also highly recommend Adler and Mark van Doren in How to Read a Book video.

This Program is Essential for Critical Thinking
I have now watched two of these programs. They are very informative. I do not quite understand what Bill Buckley Junior is thinking sometimes, but I still find these interviews crucial for understanding Critical Thinking and Political Science.
