"The German electronic genius" - effusively described by music magazine Pop at the beginning of his solo career in the early seventies, is on top of the world in 2008 A.D. Schulze's elation is the result of having spent just two days last November with the incomparable Lisa Gerrard recording two discs worth of new material now released as Farscape. Schulze weaves soundscapes that are at times threatening, passionate, sentimental and sometimes mysterious above which Gerrard's voice seems to float in its majestic and deeply moving beauty. "During the two days of recording I kept looking into the vocal room in order to see what unusual things Lisa was doing there", says Schulze about his creative partner. "But she just stood there singing. When she is in front of the microphone, the only important thing is her devotion to sound". There is this desire for an unfamiliar, creative adventure. While at the same time there is this trust in each other's skills, which distinguishes Farscape and makes it unique. Both records are, like all albums by the grand master of electronic music, "a trip into the revolutionary area of sound, which has always most interested me. With each new work I want to explore new territories. Active listening is in demand when it comes to my work! The music is actually only half composed; the other half is open for impressions from the consumer".

Great K.S. music, maybe a couple of tracks without Lisa.
Klaus Schulze is at his very best here, the question is, does he need Lisa on all the tracks?. Lisa Gerrard does have an amazing voice, and can do some beautiful sounds with it. I think maybe one or two tracks of music only, would have been better on this long double album.A few times I wanted to reduce the volume of her voice within the mix.Having said that, I think Lisa,s floating, ethereal voice matches well with the music. C.D.one is K.S. at his mesmerising, cant stop listening best.C.D.two is very good also, just not sure about the first ten minutes of track four[first track on the disc 2].I would say this is a real must if you are a K.S.fan.

None of the hoped-for synergy
This should have been a dream pairing. I'm a big fan of Lisa Gerrard, and have probably too many Schulze albums. I was really looking forward to hearing this one, but it's a real disappointment. The sound is exactly what you might expect, warm analogue tinkling from Schulze and expertly improvised non-verbal vocalisation from Gerrard. It's hard to explain just why this doesn't work as well as might be expected - the music is superficially attractive but ultimately lazy and uninvolving. The tracks are so long that they eventually become boring and Gerrard's rather clinical vocals wearing and ultimately irritating. Lisa Gerrard is capcable of great things, as is Schulze. However, they both need the right partner to bring out the best in them. With Lisa Gerrard that's clearly Brendan Perry and very few of the collaborators she has worked with outside of Dead Can Dance have taken her music anywhere near the excellence of DCD's best output. Schulze was at his best working with the much-missed Pete Namlook or ploughing his own furrow in the mid-1970's. If you want to enjoy either of these artists, I would suggest Dead Can Dance's Spiritchaser and Within The Realm Of a Dying Sun, and Schulze's Mirage or Dark Side Of The Moog IX - this last one being one being one of the best electronic albums that either Schulze or Namlook produced.

A bit repetitive
I knew Klaus Schulze as a brief member of one of my fetish groups, Tangerine Dream. I also knew that he played a a major role in electronic "atmospheric" music. But I must admit that I didn't follow his incredible production over the years (close to 100 albums!).I liked Lisa Gerrard's Gothic/Gregorian vocal work with Dead Can Dance, so I knew a bit what to expect from this Farscape. And yes, her vocal improvisations over Schulze's ambient music work perfectly well. There are 7 titles on two CD's called "Liquid Coincidence 1" to "Liquid Coincidence 7" averaging 20 minutes each. As the titles suggests, you kind of get the same atmosphere for two hours, so one could get a little bored after a while. It could even be dangerous if you are driving at night. But if you take it by smaller doses, Farscape is a very enjoyable experience.

A dreamy combination
Now this is one of those magical musical phenomena. This is Klaus doing his stuff, not dissimilar to what we have heard him do before. This is Lisa doing her stuff, not dissimilar to what we have heard her doing before. But together?A case of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. A very special set.At over 150 minutes long you could argue you are getting too much of a good thing but it only allows you to drift away for longer. This is a special piece of music. I bought it at a special time too and it will always bring me back to where I am now.Highly recommended.

A wonderful painting in sound!
Lisa Gerrard brings an extra dimension to Klaus Schulze's electronic music with her incantation style of singing. On this double-CD spanning more than two and a half hours of music over 7 compositions, Lisa's is the determining aural texture that creates pictures in the listener's mind. She may take the cue for her vocalisations from Klaus's music but weaves such prominent textures of her own that it becomes she who transports you into your inner mental world. This music takes me to lands suffused with Arabian culture, but it may transport you elsewhere: such is Klaus's intention, he says in the sleeve notes that "the music is actually only half composed; the other half is open for impressions from the consumer".The overall effect is very powerful and whilst two and a half hours of music may seem daunting, the whole CD is very easy and enjoyable to listen to, whether you choose to concentrate (and meditate?) or have it playing in the background.Farscape I (the first disc) is lighter in mood than Farscape II. On this disc in particular Klaus builds up some excellent danceful, mantric rhythms in the compositions (that, because of the Arabian influence exerted by Lisa's vocalisation, build up images of belly-dancing in my mind).Farscape II begins sombrely, as though a tragedy has befallen the Eastern lands in this musical world, but the mood lightens as the compositions progress that, to me, signal hope.If you have a good hi-fi you will love playing this really loud - the music, which builds to contain nuances from across the bass-treble spectrum, seems to enfold you and hold you as if in a cocoon.Absolutely wonderful!

Deep and beautiful - gothic new age
An exciting collaboration between two highly accomplished visionary artist. Operating in the field you could call gothic new age, beautiful and spiritual and at the same time open to the darker regions of the mind (and the world).Klaus S. is of course a master sculptor of soundscapes. Lisa Gerrard has quite simply a stunning voice and a stunning technical mastery: sounding at times like a Wagnerian heroine, a Middle East belly dancer or a new age goddess. That all vocals are being spontaneous improvisations is quite simply an amazing achivement, showing her openess to higher influences.Suited for meditation, fantasy journeys, explorations of inner space.

So disappointing.
Take two brilliant artists from different musical genres and what do you get? Sometimes you get magic, sometimes you get groundbreaking. Unfortunately with this collaboration you get two individuals that sound like they composed their pieces at opposite ends of the world and forgot to consult the other beforehand. Uncoordinated soundscapes of electronics and voice have never come across as contrived as this release has since rap met up with rock. It's to bad too, as both artists have had some incredible releases in their separate catalogues.

Outstanding!
Brilliant music! This was the CD that convinced me that Greg Allen's thesis-- that Schulze is going through a 2nd "classic period" of making great music, one at least as good and maybe better than the best of his 1970s albums-- is accurate. It's a good topic for a fun debate: I mean, it's hard to imagine music better than Moondawn, but on Farscape there is music just as good.
