Draw Write Now: My Drawing and Handwriting Book (Draw Write Now) (Draw Write Now) Paperback – April 1, 1996

This book is great for young beginners and those who need to work on their fine motor skills. It is not a handwriting program, and really doesn't emphasize letter formation at all. But the premise is that children really need to be taught to recognize basic shapes contained in objects to be able to draw the objects. This is not a skill that come naturally, and if not specifically taught, most children will become frustrated by not being able to reproduce what they are seeing in their vivid imagination. My son is four; most boys are not ready for real letter formation at this age, but need to work on fine motor skills to get ready for that instruction. This book provides that in a fun and interesting way. My son opened the book and we drew a pig right off. Later he came to me with another rudimentary pig her had drawn from memory. It seems this technique works in so far as helping a child break down an object into its basic shapes so it can be reproduced. I will use this as part of his continuing preschool/kiadergarten curriculum and will be buying the next level book.

I bought this book for my first grade daughter (6 yrs old) and I must say, it has helped tremendously with that important elementary skill: good handwriting. I ordered this practice book specifically with book one of the Draw write Now Series. She has been able to practice both penmanship and drawing at the same time. I read about this series a while back, and after some browsing and research, decided to use this as our main penmanship practice and what a great idea! The authors are a mother and daughter team and both educators. They have used basic science/farm stories to go along with the practice drawings in the first book of the series. When little ones follow the step by step directions, they end up with a bird, a farmer, a barn, three little pigs, and much more. The best part of using this book/sketch pad is that it is sturdy, well made and all of the art work is in one place. When a book is completed it is a joy to turn the pages and see the improvement in handwriting and drawing. I was delighted with this product.

I think this drawing and handwriting book is a must have if you are purchasing the Draw Write Now books. My daughters in 1st and 2nd grade each have their own one of these and enjoy being able to keep all of their drawings and handwriting samples in one book. They have become really good at drawing and are able to take what they learn through these practices and apply them to projects in other subjects, writing story books or making birthday cards! We use Handwriting Without Tears as our handwriting training, but these are good for fun exercises to reinforce the letters and work on neatness.

After teaching my own children for 25+ years, this is one curriculum I can recommend wholeheartedly. The easy to follow drawing steps make anyone an artist and help children gain fine motor skills quickly. They can be proud of the finished product if they color according to the author's instructions. Then they are encouraged to write an explanation of their picture. A very fun and success oriented approach which I am passing on to my friends of the next generation

This is our second one of these because the first got filled up. It's a nice way to keep all the drawing and writing together. Nice quality paper that the kids like.

not what i thought it would be...didn't know it was just paper designed for a picture on top and lines on the bottom. I thought it was writing prompts.

I'm sure if I knew I was ordering a blank book, I would be pleased with this purchase but I was under the assumption that I was ordering a book that had words and pictures (like the other Draw Write Now books). I do use this book because I purchased it but I kind of feel misled in that the title didn't mention it would be a blank book for my daughter to draw and write in.

This is a great companion to the book. We have used it not only to draw but to write a story to go with it. My daughter is doing great and draws and writes and then sends them off to her huge family.
