Rob Marshall directs this big-budget musical based on the classic Fellini film 8 1/2. Set in early 1960s Venice, the film follows famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he struggles to complete his latest project on the eve of his 40th birthday. Meanwhile, he must also juggle the various colourful women in his life: his wife Luisa (Marion Cotillard), his mistress Carla (Penelope Cruz), his muse Claudia (Nicole Kidman), his producer Liliane (Judi Dench), his mother (Sophia Loren) and even a prostitute who resurfaces from the depths of his past (Stacy Ferguson). Kate Hudson co-stars as the American journalist who interviews him about his life and work.

Love this film!
I had this film on DVD some years ago and enjoyed it very much, so I was pleased to find it again on Amazon. You need to bear in mind this is written in a modern opera format, but with modern (and very catchy) songs. Great cast!

Nine
`Nine' is one of those films that looked awesome from the trailer and then felt slightly anti-climatic by the time the credits roll.Featuring an incredible cast this follows a renowned Italian director as he struggle to make his next film and it also focuses on the various women in his life, from his mother, wife, mistress, film starlets, friends and admirers. The drama is inter-cut with musical numbers, which are actually quite good and liven up a rather staid and uninspiring plot.Day-Lewis is great to watch as ever and Dench is great as his friend, but Marion Cottilard, as his wife, is superb and is the strongest part of the film. Apart from the beauty factor the other actresses add, they don't bring a great deal else to the film. You can tell this has been adapted from a theatre show (by the same team that brought us `Chicago') and some scenes are shot and framed in a very stage orientated way. I actually enjoyed this aspect and felt it added to, rather than detracted from, the overall feel. All in all, this is a decent enough film and whilst the trailer makes you expect more and the cast are sorely underused, this still has enough to hold your interest for the duration. Not one to rush to see, but worth a viewing if it's on TV or at a bargain price on Amazon.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

"Knickers" Nine
I have been really surprised at the response to this film - as a previous reviewer has said you like it or hate it. I saw this at the cinema just before Xmas and thought it the best film I have seen in the last 12 months and I have seen most. I may be a little biased as I like beautiful women and it is certainly full on them, at times very skimpily dressed e.g. one memorable scene with Penelope Cruz. I thought the music was great (if you like Chicago this probably would suit you), the cinematography stunning, and the plot engaging and there was a very strong case. Daniel Day-Lewis was an excellent male lead. I can't wait to get my DVD to watch it again to see if I was right or just distracted by Dame Judi Dench and Sophie Loren who both looked stunning. Why "Knickers" Nine - you just have to see the film for the answer to that!

Hold on to your hat for Kate Hudson's big number
I was dazzled by this movie. It's rare that I can sit through a musical - I find them saccharine and implausible. But this film circumvents sentimental clichés by keeping its story true to Fellini's 1963 film Eight and a Half (which I loved) while ladling on noughties glamour combined with a stellar cast. Daniel Day-Lewis plays a blinder as the tortured genius director Guido Contini - and hold on to your hat for Kate Hudson's big number. Wow!

Fantastic Blu-Ray!
An all-star cast, great musical numbers, stunning cinematography. Nine has a good plot behind it at the musical numbers compliment it perfectly. The cast are great in their respective roles, all very well suited, and at times you'll want to take the film and put it on your wall it looks that good! The extras on the Blu-Ray are a very good addition to the package. Interviews with all of the cast members and director, behind the scenes with some musical numbers and recruiting the dancers. Two music videos for songs from the film and for DDL fans, video all for himself!A must buy. Really, buy it now.

Well, Fellini's 8 and a half was the original and has not been improved on
Daniel Day Lewis is a brilliant actor and a fairly convincing Italian self-absorbed male (Guido), but Marcello Maistroiani he ain't. And although this is a fun film and I enjoyed it thoroughly it lacked the sharpness of Fellini's 81/2 of which this is a sort of remake. Great song and dance but not convinced the director (Guido) is as "lost" as he should be!

Not bad, but then not as good as it could have been
It was like a Fellini film that he did decades ago,and it was so much better. It was a mismatch, that did not really work. Like the script was made up as they made it.
