Great memories
I cannot understate how smelly these fish were. It smelled like death but like not death I have ever smelled. Interesting taste, salty and fishy of course. Great fillets. My package arrived ahead of schedule and made for a delightful laugh when the can exploded on opening in my mother, who acted as though she was hit with a caustic acid and raced to strip as fast as possible. 100/100 recommend

Horrifying — Not Fish, Just Rotting Mush
This was by far the worst thing I’ve ever purchased on Amazon. I expected strong smell and taste — it’s surströmming after all — but what I received wasn’t even edible. When I opened the can, there were no fillets, no chunks, not even a single piece of fish. Just a disgusting, grayish sludge that looked like it had already been digested. You can see the picture — it speaks for itself. The texture was slimy and foamy, and the smell was indescribable — like a mix of sewage and decaying fish left in the sun. This is not a traditional delicacy, it’s a health hazard in a tin. Complete waste of money.

Surströmming Fillets - Fermented Herring Fillets in Traditional Tin
The can was dented in four places and swollen. It was in really bad condition. Surströmming Fillets - Fermented Herring Fillets in Traditional Tin

Get it for a cookout
You’ve seen the videos. It’s horrible. But not as bad as they make it out to be. It’s more salty than I expected. Crackers help.

No Filets
No filets at all - just bones and foamy sludge.

smelly laughs
This thing was the smelliest thing ever. I gave it to my in-laws as a gag, but my in-laws are old school and ended up eating it, even though it stunk up the whole house.

Yes, you know what it is...
Was exactly what you think it will be. The can expiration time was the same as when we received it, and was so puffy it looked explosive, so we know it would be exciting to open. Once opened it continued to fizz like an Alka Seltzer tab in a glass of water. The taste? Salty. The texture? Hard Bones and mushy flesh. The smell? Imagine opening a soiled diaper, that had been wrapped in a plastic bag and left on the dash of a car in the middle of summer. For a week. Don't knock it 'till you've tried it...
