Field Guide to the Grasses, Sedges, and Rushes of the United States

Good introductory field guide
I am a beginner when it comes to identifying grasses. This small book appeals to me because the drawings clearly emphasize characteristics of the different families and species.

I believe i got a different version than is pictured ...
I believe i got a different version than is pictured, but it is still the same. The version I recieved has a green colour all over, and the illustration on the front cover has no colour. It is black line-art put over the green background. It is also a tad but smaller than expected, which was a little disappointing. I wasn't expecting a giant book, as this is about grasses and similar plants, but i was not aware that it would be as small and skinny as it is. Other than that, it is a very interesting book. It has descriptions and illustrations, as well as small tidbits of information about the plants.

Mediocre at best.
this book has really amazing illustrations. however, it is a bit confusing to follow. the illustrations are labeled with numbers that correspond to what species is being depicted. the species described will number 1-10 etc. but the illustrations may go 1;3;4;7;10, and the reader is meant to assume if there is no illustrations corresponding to the number, then it is similar to the species listed above it. very confusing. also, i’m several pages in and very few of the grasses are native north american species. i would’ve bought a guide to European and asian grasses if i wanted to learn more about those, but i bought this guide because i thought it would display native north american species as the name implies. good cheap book & helpful to identify the nonnative grasses, but if you want to learn about the native grasses of america look for another book.

High potential to become a permanent part of my backpack library
I'm just starting to identify grasses and this book seems to be what I've been seeking for years. Well illustrated with highly detailed drawings on seeds and stems. The seed drawings are some of the best I've seen. The characteristic identification key is limited to one page for each(grass, sedge, rush). That may be sufficient - only time will tell.

Field guide, Grasses, Sedges, Rushes,
I can easily recognize through the superb drawings grasses, sedges, and rushes that I've seen in the field. I only wish my Latin was better as I am more or less a common name guy. Still a great field guide which is enjoyable to flip through and brush up on your grasses, sedges, and rushes.

Nice drawings but not useful for me.
I was really hoping to get a better "field guide" type book. This is descriptive but the illustrations are somewhat confusing and there is not a comprehensive listing of, for instance, gramma grasses. Not very useful for me.

An interesting guide for identifying grasses by their flower.
A brief guide with fairly clear black and white line drawings. A good key at that back but the guide really requires a hand lens to identify minute details of the flowers or seeds. A better guide is Grasses: An Identification Guide by Lauren Brown.
