Q: Can these be used on a blackboard?

No. I made the mistake of buying these. They don’t not work on blackboard

Q: How thick are the chalks that go in the holder please

Difficult to measure! But about 1/8 inch wide. Pleased with the item. Makes a clear line for marking, but of course the nice pointed end which gives more precise markings disappears quickly so the line soon becomes fatter. Not tried re- sharpening the end but this would be wasteful. I use mine for dress making and handbag making, placing rivets etc and it works fine.
