Surprisingly not too cheesy
It is totally possible to stash this movie in a B category, and although I don't watch these kinds of movies, this one compelled me to watch through the end and there was a reward and for that alone the higher rating. Not much else since it is all to easy to complain and criticize and this movie does not deserve that, Glad Mick Jagger turned out to be a nice guy.

All the pieces were there... But you'd never know it from the end result.
It's not THAT bad. You have to remember, this movie is from 1992, if you go in expecting modern day special effects and today's over the top clever love stories and drama, you're going to hate it. But if you just want s fun movie to kill an hour and a half, you're in luck.Rene Russo is forgettable in this one, I never thought much of her acting, but in this one she shows all the acting range from A to B. Also Anthony Hopkins has maybe 3 scenes in this movie, 2 of which are a minute or less. Then the climax of the movie where the big reveal is made about him, he does not really sell me on the whole plot. Maybe it's because he's hardly in the movie? I don't know. Then my last criticism, is directed a Mick Jagger. I thought he was very good with the role overall, he had his moments. But there is this whole creepy "be me friend" thing that really seems off, and very strange. Also, he never convinces me he's a badass. I think this is more a problem of how the character is written. He literally goes from hardcore mercenary to a softie sympathizer from start to finish of this movie. In between is his character flip flopping from hardcore merc, to funny one liner guy, to admiring Fabrege eggs, to honorable bad guy, then to white hat softer side of Jagger by the end.So what's so great about this movie? Emilio Estevez. He carries this movie overall, and puts in a good performance. Sadly, his effort is not enough to keep this movie out of the $.99 cent bin. At the time Freejack came out, this cast was A-List. But even with Estevez putting In a solid job, and Jagger doing better than I expected, it could not offset the "phoning it in" performances from Russo and Hopkins. So in closing, it's no masterpiece. But, if you're wanting a throwback sci-fi that is fun to watch, here's your bet.

Great campy Sci-Fi
I saw this originally at the movies, picked up the laser disk years ago, and now the DVD. It's one of my favorite campy Sci-Fi flicks. Big name actors in second rate rolls, pretty good special effects, a decent plot. Mick Jagger as a merc with plenty of gadgets and bizarre vehicles is a good opponent to "freejacked" race car driver Emilio Estevez. Estevez is grabbed through time at the moment of death (a freak race accident) - in a practice called FreeJacking. The result is supposed to be a flatlined brain with a healthy body. The wealthy few that can afford this service can then download their own consciousness into the new, young, healthy body. Immortality of a sort. Well, Estevez is not braindead (not in the movie anyway), and winds up as the prize in a power struggle between the two most powerful people on the planet - the #1 and #2 execs at the company that runs the whole FreeJack biz. A fun ride and worth the bucks.

So bad it's good?
4 stars is pushing it but anyone of a certain age that liked very corny sci-fi maybe in for a treat. It's dated badly, but it was never up to date when it originally came out in the early 1990's so that's not an issue really. The special effects were not great for even that period, but the action, including lots of car stunts, gunshots and explosions are still very good. With a top drawer cast and some clever ideas it rises above it's failings to deliver a what essentially is a Jason Bourne chase thriller with science fiction add on's.Emilio Estevez takes the lead as a racing driver transported to the future so a wealthy business man Can use his body to live on.Emilio escapes and goes on the run, cue lots of chases and dubious paranoia from our hero as he has to figure out what's true and who he can trust.Directed by Geoff Murphy who helmed Yocheeks 2, this is pure entertainment full of of humour, some style, lots of chases and implausible escapes. With a very starry cast, most one suspects for the paycheck this is no Shakespeare but taken on face values a tongue in cheek science fiction action movie with lots of action and a little romance it is pure fun.
