hesitated to buy but ......... transformed my vinyl playback
I Bought this to replace a 30 yr old rega rb 300 on my systemdek 1 920.Slowly over the past 6 months I have been "upgrading" the turntable initially replacing the turntable Motor with the origin live DC one. This resulted in better speed stability and much less/unnoticable wow and flutter. Pianos simply sounded stable ++ The sound seemed deeper too and after reading about origin live arms vs Rb300 upgrades I opted to buy the Onyx.It was described as a direct plug in replacement and it absolutely is. I followed the instructions for set up, relocated my Nagaoka MP150 cartridge. tightened ( finger tight ) the arm in place and then set overhang and alignment using the card provided ( easy) setting the tracking force was easy though you will need a stylus tracking force gauge. setting the bias was simple though sliding the ball "bearing" is a little tight to slide on.This all took about 1 1/2 hrs to set up ( not rushed) and everything double checked. and then finally plugged in........What you will read is that the arm needs to be played in for many hrs to sound at its best, but the initial impression iswowThe drums are more solid, the guitars more bite, little details now preset in the mix which were a blur before ( I compared my uncompressed recording of war of the worlds by the old set up with this to evaluate). Vocals are more natural and more natural at high play back levels. So all in all worth it- not sure if an equivalent priced new turntable would be better but my new set up is significantly better and music is more enjoyable again.recommended
