The 2001 File: Harry Lange and the Design of the Landmark Science Fiction Film

The ultimate book on the ultimate film
'2001: A Space Odyssey' is my favourite film of all time. I have several books on its production, but this one tops them all. Watching the film, with its iconic spacecraft designs, you might have a hard time imagining any of them looking different. Well, this book is crammed with preliminary designs of just about everything - there's an early version of the spacepod that bears more than a passing resemblance to the USS Enterprise shuttlecraft (though must have come first!) as well as the space station and the lunar lander. And you can follow the evolution of Discovery as they edged closer and closer to what finally ended up on screen. It's not just the spacecraft - there are early designs for the spacesuits and the lunar colony too. All of these are very practical but not of course 'our' 2001. But I wouldn't be surprised to see some of them used in other SF films, possibly changed just enough to avoid lawsuits!Yes, this book is expensive, but quality things usually are. If you love the film, you'll love the book.

I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over. Then buy this book.
Excellent book containing a wealth of material not available elsewhere. It is very specifically concentrated on Harry Lange's involvement with the film, as the title tells you.Personal insights pepper the text which details the story of Harry Lange's work and it is an informative and entertaining read. However it is the hundreds of drawings that raise the book to treasure status, everything from rough concept sketches to immaculate line drawings for production purposes. This is a must buy for 2001 aficionados and a fine companion to Adam Johnson's "2001:The Lost Science".2001: THE LOST SCIENCEFor a wider view of the film, Piers Bizony's "The Making Of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey" (Taschen) remains supreme. The Making of Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey'

If you love 2001, you will love this
This book is a MUST if you love the film. There is a lot of data here over and above Piers Bizony's work. The first thing that struck me was the quantity of data, drawings and blueprints. Harry Lange (HL) generated so much detailed work for the film and luckily for us Chris Frayling dug this out of Lange's garage and with the help of HL's son, produced this excellent book. Having had the privilege of meeting HL back in Minehead in 1993 during the Space expo there with Arthur C Clarke, I only wish then this book was available then. An amazing book on the work of an amazing man for an amazing film.

A Hefty Tome
As expected from previous reviews, not disappointed with overall content. Lange was gifted. Some of the on-set images reproduced appeared to be a little grainy, but acceptable. Certainly qualifies as an art house/ coffee table addition to your 2001: ASO collection. A hefty Tome @2kgs. Suggest Amazon strongly consider protecting the book with corner protection within the outer package(arrived with minor cover corner damage marking rear pages).

Brilliant
Brilliant, this is probably all of the extent drawings by Harry Lange, aand shows the progress towards the final style of the film. Some of the comments by the model-malers and their direction is very interesting.

Beautiful insiders' view of the classic film!
I've lost count of the times I've seen 2001: A SPACE ODDESEY, but it has never failed to thrill, intrigue and stun me. Its grand scale look, terse and minimalist dialogue and mesmerizing special effects are to this day hallmarks of genius-level filmmaking. This book--handsomely bound--gives the reader an insider's view of the meticulous design of the film. In an age where CGI is the standard, the practical effects of 2001 remain unmatched. Tremendous book!

A jewel of interest for film buffs and space enginer
It’s an unique book in that the design process was trying to make all the space props particulary realistic. The actual engineering that went into the film is considerable and this book serves as reference equaly for fans of 2001, people interested in space engineering and it’s history and conceptual designers.

2001-File: Das Harry Lange Archiv
Sämtliche Modell-Bauten in 2001 (inkl.
