Southern Surroundings: The Ultimate Skynyrd Collection (1 CD/2 DVD)

Ordered this 3disc pack for the DVD audio as can get greatest hits in other formats such as “gold &platinum “and others. However the DVD audio was surprisingly a dud and couldn’t be played ( perhaps a one off ). Was returned to amazon and a new one was supplied promptly without hassle and played perfectly. This was the first time I ever returned anything to amazon and was worried about the process of exchange considering I reside overseas. I can say the exchange was a good experience and the return postage was reimbursed as a gift card for future purchases; very pleased ! I ordered this compilation because it did have great reviews. And upon listening I concur; the sound is fantastic; however would be great if there where more songs. ( suggestion: release all of there titles on DVD audio and / or blue ray ; solution solved ) For the novice and are confused about what DVD audio is ; it’s a special surround sound 5.1 (sometimes 6.1) format that can be played only on a DVD audio disc player. DVD audio Cannot be played on a regular DVD player ( However some DVD audio can be played On a normal DVD player if they have an option of Dolby or Dts but the sound is differing )But what does matter is who’s at the helm when mixing the surround sound. Example this 5.1 discwas mixed exceptionally well. Where other DVD audios can fall short. ( I.e. Metallica’s black album on DVD audio .. lacks punch. )If anyone is curious I would recommend to buy a Sony 1100 es Blue Ray player as you can play DVD audios and surround SACD’s without breaking the bank. Will need a decent surround sound receiver to match.Unfortunately there isn’t that many titles on DVD audios as there used to be but it well worth it.

This is by far the ultimate greatest hits package. This three disc set is amazing. The first disc is a stereo CD titled 'All Time Greatest Hits' with 14 of Skynyrds absolute best. It includes a 'live' version of 'Free Bird' instead of the studio. The second disc is an astonishing 'LIVE' video from a 1975 BBC Old Grey Whistle Test including 7 tracks. I've heard a great deal of live video performances over the years, I've heard a great deal of vintage performances as well. I have NEVER heard a performance/ recording quality anything near the scale of this one. Although it is limited to stereo, that takes nothing away. It's like they just sit down at a sound stage in your neighborhood and perform their hearts out. Every time I play it, I am completely stunned/astonished at sound and performance quality. It's worth the price just for this disc alone. The third disc is the best of the bunch. For those of us with DVD AUDIO players, it does not disappoint. Titled: Southern Surroundings: Classic studio recordings newly mixed in discreet 5.1 surround sound by Elliot Scheiner. This 5.1 multichannel 10 track disc includes all our favorite Skynyrd songs with possibly the greatest mastering producer ever in Bob Ludwig supervising the 96kHz/ 24 Bit Mastering at Gateway Mastering DVD Production Facility and as always, anything remastered by Bob Ludwig, its cream of the crop. It sounds astonishing/stunning/brilliant and any other superlatives you might think of. BUY THIS DISC!!! It's great.

First off Lynyrd Skynyrd is my favorite band of all time so I might be a little biased with my review. The main reason I bought this was for the old grey whistle test live performance and I wasn't disappointed. Its a great mix of common songs and less commonly heard songs. I'm a big fan of the song "I got the same ol' blues" and they rocked it out! Ronnie's stage presence is also such an enjoyment to watch. Also I didn't really even notice there was no Ed King or Steve Gaines playing a third guitar until they played Sweet Home Alabama but that's the only song you notice it in. Allen Collins does such a badass job on freebird and nearly jumps over Ronnie's head...EPIC! The other two CDs are awesome as well but I already have such a full repetoire of Skynyrd that I'm more interested in watching them live. #SkynyrdNation

I bought this for the 5.1 remix DVD-A. It was very good. It was missing 3 of my favorite songs, but the ones it had sounded quite good.

One disappointment was, disc 3 is advertised as a dvd, but only has a few still photos. There is no live footage like disc 2, which is great, but only 40 min long.

Never would have guess LS would be mastered in surround. If you are a longtime or casual fan you will enjoy this.

The Live on Old Grey Whistle Test DVD was good as was the Greatest Hits CD. The problem was with Southern Surroundings DVD-Audio/Video disc. Did not contain live performances on the DVD, just songs and still photos of the band members. Quite a disappointment.

サザン・ロック（死語か？）のナンバーで懐かしいレイナード・スキナードのベスト＆ハイレゾ音源集です。内容はCD＋DVD＋DVD-Audioの3枚組セット1.のCDにはベスト14曲を収録（remaster / 音良いです）2.のDVDにはBBCテレビコンサートライヴ(LPCM :48/24)←残念ながら音は「それなり」です。3.のDVD-Audioには代表曲10曲のサラウンド（MLPロスレス:96/24＆Dolby Digital:48/24）とステレオ（MLPロスレス:96/24）が収録。 上の1で良いと思ったCDが聴けなくなるほどの音の広がり、音の鮮度、低音の迫力が段違いの世界を聴かせてくれます。（音源説明のシール部分とジャケUPしておきました）CDのリマスタリングエンジニアはDoug Schwartz96/24へのマスタリングエンジニアは　Bob Ludwig、いい仕事しています。また、Elliott Scheiner氏の5.1サラウンドmixも素晴らしいです。当初、「彼らの音楽をハイレゾで聴いてもな〜」と思いましたが、ドッコイ、かなり良いですこれを聴きながらのドライブは絶品かも？衰えた感性を呼び覚ましてくれるものがあります（ノリノリ♪です）これで2012.12現在、2,075円程度ですから、お買い得、持っとく価値ありですジャケは紙ジャケの折り畳み見開き形式ですが、最初届いたとき「どこにDISKが3枚も入っているの？」と思うほどの薄さ。当然、DISKの取り出しはキッツキツ・・・余り何度も出し入れを繰り返したくありません。何らかの対処が必要かもです。それにしてもジャケのメンバーの服装、揃いも揃って、ベルボトムジーンズ（色つき）・・・今から見るとチィットダサく、懐かしい・・・（はい、私も着てました）
