Measuring about 9 by 10 cm, this patch draws inspiration from the name of the American Antarctic research center which first appears in the iconic 1982 John Carpenter film THE THING and is also featured in two Dark Horse comic books, namely: THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD and THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD: QUESTIONABLE RESEARCH. A 2002 video game also entitled THE THING likewise showcases the said U.S. Antarctic research center. In the paranoia-flavoured sci-fi horror movie directed by Carpenter, the research base is infiltrated by a shape-shifting extraterrestrial being during the winter of 1982, which leads to the demise of almost everyone there, except for the unlikely survivors, the site’s Chief Mechanic whose name is Childs, and the heroic Helicopter Pilot, R.J. MacReady (portrayed by Kurt Russell). So wear something that is a part of Hollywood history and celebrate one of the best films by Carpenter, acknowledged as Hollywood’s "Prince of Darkness" and one of its "Masters of Horror". Featuring a classic NATO-like design coupled with high-contrast red, white, black and light/sky blue colors, this patch is sure to attract some attention (and become a conversation-starter) when worn on your denim jeans or shorts, your old shirt or jacket, backpack, etc.

Good for sew-on only
Most of the patch looks perfect but I wish the font that says "NATIONAL SCIENCE INSTITUTE" was a little more sharp and consistent. The colors are great and the overall quality of the embroidery is pretty good. If you intend to sew it on you should be happy with it. If you intend to put this patch on a nylon parka you will either have to risk melting your parka or you will have to be willing to poke holes in it with a sewing needle, which isn't great for gore-tex.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The problem with this patch is with the iron-on glue. I had to heat it up to 395 degrees F (202C) to get it barely soft enough to stick. Even at this temp it didn't stick that well but I couldn't go any hotter because I didn't want to melt my $600 parka. Also at about 395F the "1982" was starting to melt (hard to see in the picture). I believe the glue will need about 420F-430F to really work so, in other words, you probably can't iron this patch onto anything without damaging the embroidery. If you think this is a case of user error I'll explain my technique so you can decide. I started at 170F as measured by IR thermometer, pre heated the patch for as long as I thought it would take to get the patch up to iron temp (about 30-40 seconds), then tried to iron it on. I jumped the temp up in 20 degree incriments and repeated the process until I finally got to 395 and had to accept the less than great results.TL:DR The patch looks nice but it's basically useless for iron-on applications

Good thing I brought alcohol
Thanks to the Outpost 31 US Antarctica 1982 Research Program patch, I was able to secure a position working at the South Pole. Now I spend my days looking at penguins marching and snow falling. Good thing I brought alcohol, because the boredom could kill you.

This "thing" is perfect. Looks great on my parka!
Exactly as pictured. Looks great on my parka. Looks even better on my lab coat. Time to start wandering the lab with a torch, a bit of wire and a Petri dish of "blood" ....

If it takes us over, then it has no more enemies, nobody left to kill it. And then it's won.
Unofficial patch of the film The Thing. Great item. Place on the top of the arm / shoulder of your Eskimo Parka and you're all ready to hunt some aliens. "Nobody... nobody trusts anybody now, and we're all very tired. Nothing else I can do, just wait... R.J. MacReady, helicopter pilot, US outpost number 31."
