Johnny Cash Book review
A good book. Gives graphic details of his drug addiction; mental and domestic problems, and his brushes with the law. From being born in 1932 until 1997. Tells it as it was. Written as though spoken and not clouded with jargon and easy to read. Only down part is many references to his collaborators etc on his records etc

Mature
A more mature book coming from someone who has lived an exceptional life. Written by a man who has made his peace with God, his loved ones and with himself. A very good read and a must for country music fans, as he mentions so many artists which I personally have yet to discover.

A keeper for sure
First read this amazing book in my mid 20s, but then someone took it from my house. Don't blame them, who wouldn't want to read this book. Bought it again just to own it forever.

This book had me in tears from the start. I am a big fan of his but his life was such an interesting one which reflects through his music.

Not for everyone.
A "must-read" for Cash fans...but maybe not for everyone else! I'm a fan of his music and I wanted to read this book after watching the film Walk the Line (This book was the main inspiration for the film). I feel like there's alot of lists of names, either people he worked with or just generally liked, and a bit too much religion. I'm not religious and I have no issue with people who are, but there's quite a bit of theological discussion and talk of praying and the saints. This just doesn't interest me when I'm reading a book about Johnny Cash! It's a very candid and personal reflection about his life, even the addictions and the dark side of things. I enojoyed reading about his life growing up in the cotton fields and he clearly loves his wife and extended family. It's soothing to think that a guy who had so much darkness in his life, was able to reflect on it all with a calm mind.

Johnny Cash published Cash,The Autobiography in 2000 with Patrick Carr. Cash tells you of his depression era childhood in rural Arkansas and of his love of music even back then. Several chapters later, Cash recounts his experiences in the US Army during the Cold War in Germany from which he moved on to selling appliances and playing music on the side while at the same time raising a family. His beginnings with Sun Records, at the same time as Elvis Presley are legendary. Even back then, he was already taking pills just to keep up with the relentless schedule of touring and recording. Cash tells you that prolonged amphetamines usage cause a form of laryngitis, above and beyond marital breakup. Cash eventually pulled out of it and settled in with his sidekick and star in her own right, June Carter. He’s got all the ups and all the downs, particularly the 1980s, which was his lost decade, until Rick Rubin rehabilitated him in the 1990s. Interestingly Cash treasured his nomination to the Country Music hall Of Fame more than that of the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of fame. Despite all the truth and honesty, the book leaves you a bit underwhelmed, especially if you have seen the movie. It simply lacks the energy and drive. Johnny Cash and his ghostwriter move from one episode to another in an air brushed yet melancholic manner as if they are the feverish dreams of an old man. I honestly can’t recommend this for anyone but complete Johnny Cash fans. On occasion, Cash quotes from his now out-of-print 1975 Memoirs, Man In Black, which had a little more oomph and was faster paced.

Good read, impressive. It's like hearing the real story from the actual Mr. Cash himself, really enjoyed the 1st person narration. Such a life with ups and downs, full of intimate reflections and personal thoughts. Not just for avid fans, but highly readable for anyone into 60s music, rock, folk, blues.
