A timeless story of difficult loves and the life inbetween
This book came to my attention through a recent news article, and as I am gender non-conformist, I had to read this text. From the outset, Radclyffe does a remarkable job of creating a character who feels genuine. She exists dually as the person others want her to be and the person she truly is, and that character detail is so right. The text moves at a decent pace and tells a moving tale, but this is not a happy story, and this is not a book that makes light of its protagonist and the challenges she endures. That said, this is an excellent book that will be relatable for some and informative for others.I do hope you give this book a read. It’s a journey that is as applicable today as it was in 1928.

Worth reading!!!!
I heard about this book on Antique Roadshow and wanted to see why it was banned...I suppose at the time it was written, there was an issue with the topic...that being said, I loved this book...my heart ached for the trials of Stephen...but loved her for her strength and compassion......definitely worth reading....

Beautifully Written
This novel is a cornerstone of lesbian classical literature, as well as gender identity. The experiences of the main character feel very real for Hall, and almost autobiographical. This creates an emotionally charged novel about finding oneself, their sexuality, and their gender identity in an era that was not accepting and often ostracizing for those outside the prescribed norm.

A Classic!
Read this book if you want to be depressed. At times the book was slow but you instantly sympathize with Stephan and her struggles. Even though this book is set in a very different time then we are now, the themes remain the same. It definitely deserves it's place as a classic lesbian novel!

Well written, compelling
Amazing that this book was written almost 100 years ago. It is as pertinent today as when it was written. Highly recommend.

Absorbing
Couldn't put it down. The writer took the reader on the emotional roller coaster life can present if one feels like an outsider.
