Pretty much the definitive state of play for these beautiful members of the weasel family in the UK. Required reading for anyone interested in any of the martens as this is one of the best studied of all of them. Includes information on their ecology, the history of their interactions with human beings across their range, and interesting comparisons with their most direct competitor, the Stone Marten, which the author suspects may once have been resident in the UK. The current state of play with their recovery from near extinction in the UK, and possible conflicts and problems that may arise as they recover their range and numbers are also covered.

Hence this book is a great introduction of an upcoming an recovering species
Not many monographs on the pine marten exist; with Birks’s book there are now two. As in all of Johnny’s books most of the focus is on Mustelids in the UK situation, with inevitable neglect of the wider European ecology. Hence this book is a great introduction of an upcoming an recovering species, quite adaptable to cultural forest landscapes. Johnny covers this quite well, with great and at times entertaining writing.

Very readable
Very informative but in a real accessible manner. Not at all dry or academic but teaches you an awful lot about a brilliant animal.

Thanks to the Brits, no good book about it in france
Very nice book, informative with a touch of humour. It helped me understand better the pine marten living in the small wood behind my house, and sometimes comes into my garden.
