Excellent Value Very Good Knives
A wonderful range of knives. Using this as my starter kit for good knives. The case is very well made. To my surprise, I've used the included "Mercer Rules" nearly every day. It's easy to clean also. I have kept my knives cleaned and dried each time. Not a speck of rust or discoloration. The included melon-baller has been a godsend too. It's very sharp and I've used it to clean out peppers, squash and zucchini. The peeler is used nearly every day too. I gave away my old sharpening steel since this one is so much better than what I had. The only thing I replaced was the thermometer with a quick read digital model. I have not used the pastry bags yet. The knives and peeler have great grips. The chef's knife comes out every time I step into the kitchen. Now I can see why some people love a particular knife! I had planned on purchasing one good knife at a time when i came across this set. Then I figured I could always return the set when half or more failed to meet my expectations. It didn't take much cooking to realize what a fantastic value I had. I have suggested this set to several friends and as gifts. I had planned on having my new knives professionally sharpened, but they are already very sharp. Try these knives then make your decision.

Good for school
I initially bought them for culinary school and have had them for over 2 months and my chef knife still has a pretty shard edge. The pack also comes with all the knives you need if you’re just starting at a kitchen or school. And it’s not too big so it’s very easy to store and doesn’t take up space. Overall it’s a great purchase and i recommend for anyone who plans on starting culinary school.

Very awesome set and great value for the money!
This was an early Christmas present for me from my wife. She let me make the selection, and these knives rock! Sharp as anything out of the case, I gave them a light hone with the steel and then proceeded to chop slice and dice a bunch of stuff for dinner tonight. The knives slid right through whatever I was cutting and held their edge without a problem. The case is very nice for when I want to take them with me to holiday catering events I do.I also ordered the Mercer 400/1000 grit and 3000/6000 whetstones, along with angle guides to keep these so sharp that I could do open heart surgery with them :-D.These would also be great for culinary students since it also includes a washable pastry bag with tips, ruler, extra pockets in the case, plating tool, paring knife and a pocket thermometer as well as a sturdy case. You know what they say...take care of your tools and they will take care of you. I haven't sharpened them yet, because you can use them as soon as you wash them. RECOMMENDED.

Great knives!
My son is taking culinary classes so we chose this pack of knives because they have all the knives he needed and a few extra. He loves them. He uses them in class and when he cooks at home he pulls his trusty set out. He keeps them sharp and as my youngest son says to me after helping cut veggies for a family BBQ, "I cut my finger Mom, his knives are sharp!!" Showing me a nice chunk he took out of his finger.

Nice culinary kit but knife guards are damaging/dangerous
This is a really nice kit for a culinary class I am taking: 4 knives, knife guards, thermometer, peeler, steel, and larger Mercer Rules stainless steel ruler/cuts guide. It is a nice price compared to school bookstore. The problem is the knife guards, which are tight, clam-shell like enclosures that grip the knives tightly, so tightly that the top cuffs scratch the knives. The chef knife, for instance, was only used 1 day, and putting it in an out of the scary too-tight knife guard, scratched it in many places. Also, guards are so tight, extreme attention is required to insert into guard, and a lot of strength and attention is required to remove the knife from the holder. If it weren't for the scratching and the too tight guards, I would keep this kit. I will just purchase the same brand but different kit that does not have the blade guards. I will buy a different brand of guards, because these are scary and damage the knives. I thought the roll bag was very nice, so I will buy a Mercer kit that has the same bag. One thing I didn't like but could have lived with, was the huge & heavy Mercer Rules that came included. I never used it and it is still wrapped. I had bought the Mini and it had the essential info and was more portable and a lot less heavy than the one that came with. Also, the Mercer Rules stainless template that came with, is so big, it rubs the top of the bag where it is coated with plastic or some material, and I can see it is abrading already, though this is how it was packed and shipped. So I think the other Mercer knife roll set will be better and I can just buy different covers and don't have to be bothered with the ridiculously heavy, sharp and unwieldy included Mercer Rules template. I think these are very good knives for a student, and even our instructor uses a Mercer kit but not the one with the knife guards, which I totally don't recommend.

Best bang for your buck forget the store brands .
This set was ordered for my wife as she was tired of all the target andbrand knives and just wanted a decent knife. I took a chance after an extensive search and purchased these for a Christmas present. This is good steel. we carved a ribeye bone in roast and had to be carefull as the blade would shave bone and we could make slices as thin as we wanted after chopping up some raw acorn squash which usually will destroy any of our old blades.I almost gave it four stars as the case, meat thermometer, and measurement tool count as pieces and there was a few empty pockets in the case. Throw in a couple more knives andskip the trinkets IMO but after trying all the blades multiple times I am impressed.with edge retention. The handles are comfortable and slip resistant alsoOne last thing, when you run these blades along the provided steel They "SING" like a bell which for me has always proven to mean good steel
