An Inexpensive Plan With Lots of Undisclosed Caveats
I just quit goSmart. It's a very stripped down service, but the reason I quit is that they block "short-code" text messages--text messages that banks and other secure websites are beginning to use more and more--usually to send a temporary 6-digit login code.If you have a retirement or investment account with significant funds, you generally should be using this kind of security.Nowhere in the goSmart site (except perhaps--I don't know--buried in the terms & conditions) do they tell you this. When I called customer support they said, "Oh we don't support short-code text messages." (I never knew there were different types of text messages.)And since it's a pre-paid plan and they refused to refund anything. I filed a complaint with the CA Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and the FCC.Other goSmart caveats:o If you have an iPhone, they don't support visual voice mail (automatic downloading of message audio to your phone)o If you previously had AT&T, you had the ability to go online and look at your call history going from the present unbilled periodback for several months (I need this for my business.) goSmart doesn't make any call records available.o Even if you've set up automatic withdrawal to pay your account, they send too many text messages:1)Your account is due tomorrow and then at 3:00 am--2) Your account is due today;3) We're gonna take money out by automatic w/d tomorrow;4) we done taken your money today :-)--Most at 3 in the morning--you have to remember to turn off your cell ringer at that time. There is no way to turn off these messages. The plethora of text messages makes me doubt whether the $5/month savings for automatic withdrawal is worth the trouble.o goSmart also has an impenetrable customer service, with folks who aren't empowered to do anything and they do not have any dispute resolution managers or supervisors. (Even with AT&T you can go up the command chain).o AT&T's goPhone (a prepaid plan when signed up with automatic w/d) is actually cheaper and also has the $5 deduction for automatic withdrawal (and I really dislike AT&T, but it looks like I can't escape them).o goSmart is owned by T-mobile. The only way to find the corporate phone number is using an internet whois server.o Data Speed: They only support 3G; if you go over your limit you end up on 2G or EDGE. I originally got goSmart becauseI have an iPhone 4, which is only capable of 3G, but the other trade-offs with goSmart have simply proved to be too muchfor me.CONCLUSION: If you only need to receive text message from other cell phones and not from websites where you needreally good authentication, you don't need cumulative data from your cell phone bills, you don't mind the lack ofvoicemail download capabilities (even if your smartphone is capable of it), and people whose customer service jobs areso narrowly defined that they can't do anything for you, then this is your carrier.NETWORK: Owned by T-Mobile to compete with Cricket et al. Network is ok in most metro areas.
