Always Been A Fan Of Mike Nesmith
I was enthusiastic about finding a seller of this 5 Album collection for Mike Nesmith at a reasonable cost for my budget. The first 4 albums of this 5 CD product I previously purchased back when they were only out in vinyl at various record shops in the 70s. I gave those records away, but am so very happy to find them again in CD form from this wonderful vendor in addition to an Album I have never had before. Mike Nesmith is a unique artist, and I am so pleased with the quick shipping and great packaging job used for my purchase. Great Seller, highly recommend them.

Actually: 25 stars. Five for each CD.
Lately, I have been reassessing the music of my misspent youth. After reading Nesmith' s autobiography a few years ago, I went back into The Monkees catalog. The guilty pleasures from my late middle-school years were joined by many more proto-bubblegum pop gems. When you get old you get the opportunity "to not give a green gawd-dam" about what others think of your choices (herein specifically the soundtrack to my early teen years). I do agree with Nesmith' s screed about the second Monkees' LP; where they had no real or discernable input on a blatant money grab. With Michael's recent demise and the generally favorable review of his entire bodies of work (music, video, author, composer, etc., etc., etc.), he and his post-Monkees music have had a light shown upon albums such as these five First National Band offerings. When these albums first appeared (on vynil) back in the early '70s, I did not purchase them at that time, as my weekly budget was quite tight. I heard them on friends' stereo systems (some hi-fi, but most lo-fi). The competition for my meager entertainment dollars required some real heavy lifting to secure a purchase. At the time, these recordings were interesting, but not arresting. In the intervening fifty-plus years, these recordings have aged quite well. Today, reproduced on superior sound quality CD s, the lyrics are clear, the instruments are powerful and precise, the musicians are revealed to be Masters, and subtle touches (unheard previously) now add detail and depth. The quality of the songwriting is exceptionally high and consistent. "Red" Rhodes is a steel guitar god and an Americana treasure.I bought this very affordable, bare-bones "box set", because I was curious. If you like Michael Nesmith, proto-country/rock, Americana' s nativity, played by some strange "Cadillac Cowboys", then this should be a no-brainer purchase. I recommend playing these recordings on good stereo equipment, at decent volume. No need for state-of-the art playback equipment, but good quality headphones are a necessary match for maximum enjoyment.

Much cleaner mix than iTunes
Judging by the iTunes downloads of these recordings, the originally released mixes (especially for the first two albums) were quite muddy. While not perfect, these recordings are much cleaner, allowing me to distinguish the individual instruments. The downside, is that the drums end up being a bit too much in the foreground, at least for my taste. There are a few nice bonus tracks (one on "Loose Salute" & three on "Tantamount to Treason Vol. 1") that gives this collection some added value. Overall, I'm glad I made this purchase. This isn't an audiophile remaster by any stretch of the imagination, but the songs sound great in my car.

Nice collection at a good price.
What can I say about this box set other than it makes me smile. A great collection of Michael's music.

A great collection of Michael's first five real solo albums
This is a great collection that will introduce many people that may have not heard what Michael was capable of beyond his great work with The Monkees. This collection begins with his first true solo album "Magnetic South" - a true classic - and continues on through the next four - all diverse and very creative. The first album after the Monkees was "The Wichita Train Whistle Sings", which though it features his own music, was a huge band / orchestral recording without Nez singing lead. THIS WAS A GREAT PRICE FOR SO MUCH WONDERFUL MUSIC!!

Underappreciated Talent
The creative force behind the 60s pop group the Monkees, Mike Nesmith was much, much more. One of the first to merge rock and country music he most definitely influenced many who came after him including the Eagles and Flying Burrito Brothers. Not only a first rate performer Nesmith was a gifted songwriter. These 5 albums make up the beginning of a mostly overlooked career that should have been so much more. Do yourself a favor and "discover" this wonderful singer and some great songs.

Great music from Nez
What a great album! I have only just begun to explore all of Mike Nesmith's music outside of the Monkees. He was an amazing early country rock songwriter and a great performer. Anyone familiar with his career knows he was a genius and trailblazer in several areas. Sad that he is gone. RIP Nez.

Great country pop
Great country pop. Michael Nesmith made a fine contribution to the music world. Favourites are 'Silver Moon' and 'Joanne', since they were played most on radio, but there are so many other great ones. Also bought "Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash", so I covered the country music. Also a necessity was the album, "The Newer Stuff" which is so creative. Of course I have all the Monkees albums; goes without saying!

Good quality CDs containing music from a very productive period ...
Good quality CDs containing music from a very productive period post Monkies but before he entered his comfort zone. I'm very pleased with this collection.I was reminded what a fine album Magnetic South is - perhaps ultimately his finest.

Essential first 3 sides of M. Nesmith collection soft country sounds
Great remastering for collectors although this first album effort is criminally neglected Wichita Train Whistle Sings from 1968
