Flames Of War: Battle of El Alamein Starter Set

Kind of an interesting take on the starter kit. I was mostly after the tanks for painting, and for that the price was fair. The game aspect was more a curiosity, but I did ended up playing a basic match with my son. Fun! What you need to play is all here, aside from stuff associated with assembly (glue, sprue clippers, files, paint, etc.). Includes a nice short-form rule book, dice, 2-D scenery, etc.Mix of tanks is great for anyone who is interested in the "classic" North Africa campaign tank battles, and the included sprues even allow some individual choices at this level. Crusaders can be 2- or 6-pounder guns, and the Panzer III and Panzer IV both have a number of options, as well (short vs long 5 cm, uparmored, short versus long 7.5 cm). The Grant could be made into a Lee (the extra mini-turret is on the sprue), I suppose, though the included stat card is only for a Grant. All the sprues come with a few extras to customize the tanks (jerry cans, wooden boxes, tarps, etc.), though you would need a lot more to get to the level seen in the sample photos (and frankly in many of the real life photos of tanks in North Africa).As a starter set, it's sort of an odd in-between, though. The Tanks game starter kit feels much more like a full standalone game - playing a match of that with what is in that kit really gives you the full experience of Tanks (minus more, well, tanks, of course). El Alamein is...not really the Flames of War experience, as the game system is designed for much larger forces and armies. On the other hand, it's a nice entry way to what is simply too expansive and complex of a game to allow for any other approach, short of one with a higher price tag. My understanding is that the old Open Fire kits were more along these lines (with tanks, infantry, even an AT gun).

The detail and accuracy of the figures on Battlefront mini's is excellent! Allows me to play a complete battle with no added components. Arrived prior to expected delivery date. Overall an excellent value and great way to get started in miniature wargaming!

Very good quality; easy to assemble, but I strongly recommend you check the FOW website for the step by step videos. I also recommend that you purchase the optional rare-earth magnets that the vendor produces. It also has a mini-version of the rule book included!

Excellent starter set and a great value. This is what launched me into the hobby/game.
