Tattoos in Japanese Prints Hardcover – September 26, 2017

This work supplies a summary of the Japanese tattoo tradition that began in the late Edo period. It includes excellent pictures of Kuniyoshi, Kunisada, and Kunichika prints. I cannot recommend this book enough, it is high quality and Sarah Thompson does an excellent job. I think tattooers in particular would benefit immensely from this book. I collect Ukiyo-e and love Japanese tattooing and history, if you are the same, you need this book, and for what it provides compared to a lot of other tattoo books, it is a great value. All around wonderful book and purchase, I find myself looking at it all the time.

Comprehensive history of Japanese tattoos with beautiful illustrations

I am a fan of tattoos, Japanese style tattoos, and ukiyo-e imagery. This book is about THE very specific intersection of these things. If you're looking for anything else, there are better choices. If you're looking for a book about tattoos, this book will disappoint you. If you're looking for a book featuring Japanese tattoos, look elsewhere. If you're looking for ukiyo-e imagery, look elsewhere. If you're looking for ukiyo-e imagery that depicts tattoos then this is your book! Don't get me wrong, I love the book! I just didn't know exactly what it was before I bought it.

I am in Japan. Reviewing this book was very helpful to understand mores and norms of society and culture. I just purchase four copies as gifts for martial art friends.

If you like japanese prints and/or tattoo, this is a must have. The introduction is detailed and well written. The images are of extremely good guality. I have seen details I couldn't appreciate otherwise.
