Stand by for Action: anything could happen on your DVD player in the next half-hour
Despite its intended UK home market having no colour TV in 1964, Gerry Anderson looked to the future and to selling the series to the American networks, and made ‘Stingray’ in colour. It was a good decision. All 39 episodes of this classic sci-fi series about Troy Tempest (character based on the actor James Garner), his sidekick ‘Phones’ Sheridan and the silent aquatic Marina in their atomic sub Stingray, protecting the human race from malevolent undersea races are presented here on a five-DVD package in their original running order.Besides the technicolour, other innovations for this series included interchangeable heads for the marionettes enabling differing facial expressions (sometimes just for a few seconds in a scene) and two strong female characters – though Marina doesn’t speak as she comes from an undersea race of mute telepaths! In keeping with most of the action taking place under the sea, the series deploys some impressive blue/green lighting effects and an often atmospheric soundtrack.Even though no restoration has been done on the original episodes, they still look more than OK. For a TV series aimed at kids in 1964, the storylines are generally strong with bursts of plentiful action as the crew of ‘Stingray’ encounter sentient undersea races both friendly and hostile, but they often have a light touch too. The characters are surprisingly well realised, from the chronically cantankerous Commander Shore to the conniving secret agent X20 who sounds like the actor Peter Lorre, and the series villain Titan whose character seems to be based on Mussolini but speaks like Sir Laurence Olivier. The atomic submarine ‘Stingray’ is, however, the star of the show. The Andersons sure had a flair for designing futuristic looking machines for their TV series and the sleek, fish-shaped blue & yellow sub is one of the most enduring and memorable.(and BTW, does Marina remind anyone of Melania Trump? Look closely...)

Good honest entertainment
As a thirty-something idly searching for the programmes I remembered as a kid, all the Gerry Anderson programmes featured high on the list - and I am now totally hooked! This box set is exactly what it says; all the episodes made of Stingray. This was the first TV series entirely made in colour and features the exciting music and groundbreaking special effects that are a trademark of the era and of Anderson. The technology might seem pretty archaic compared to now, but this is MORE than made up for in characerisation and narrative. Stingray contains larger-than-life characters with well thought out personalities, far-fetched adventure stories and is pure entertainment. The baddies and heroes are caricatures, the thrills so thrilling that it verges on ridiculous and it has healthy humour for adults and kids alike. If you like your entertainment to be fun, honest and straightforward, then you'll love this. Of all the Anderson series, this is probably the one with the highest tongue-in-cheek ratio - and there's something contagious about hearing the voice actors thoroughly enjoying what they are doing. And that title music has to be the most breathless piece of Barry Gray ever - even the orchestra sound like they are having a whale of a time!

Could benefit with remastering (if I was being fussy) but nice to have .
Finally took the plunge and ordered the standard issue dvd collection.Nicely packaged and securely delivered .On a big screen telly the original transfer flaws are obvious (similar to TPTV quality) but in my opinion the onscreen patena just adds to the charm of this series ;It would be nice to see it remastered in blu-Ray but I’m guessing it would be niche and too expensive to do .The sound is ok though but don’t expect hi-fi quality .Worth having if you’re an Anderson fan.🚀

Sting Rave
When I was a child Stingray was one of my favourite shows.I spent hours drawing my versions of the submarine and the characters, though not the girls, I couldn't draw girls. CBC Canada, broadcast Stingray on Sundays right after a show called Hymn Sing. I would endure watching Hymn Sing (trust me, as a child, it was like spending 10 years stuck on an ice floe) just so I wouldn't miss a second of STINGRAY ! Viewing it again after all these years, I see why I loved it so much. It's like watching a 30 minute toy commercial, or more correctly, watching someone play with toys for 30 minutes. The shows ethos seems to be, blow things up now and ask questions later, which is perfect from a child's point of view. The music is also exciting, it Swells whenever Stingray blasts out of the submarine pen.The theme music has cool horns and percussion (bongos??!!). All in all it's a wonderful box set. WARNING the dvds may not work with players formated for North American use. I've had success watching them on my all region Sony blu-ray player.( check internet for info)

Serie mitica
