GREATLY INVOLVING, OFTEN UPSETTINGLY SO
One and a half years since the apocalypse. Six months since Season 3. That former prison now proves a sanctuary indeed - complete with livestock and homegrown food. Admittedly zombies still cluster outside the reinforced wire fences, but those within feel more secure than for a quite a while. At long last can their reluctant leader Rick relax a bit...?As if.Before long disaster strikes, both inside and out. Adding to troubles is The Governor's return, he determined to destroy all they have accomplished. Arguably Season 4 is to prove the most horrific, most upsetting, so far - a constant reminder that "the walking dead" refers not to the zombies but to those who survive, so many soon not to be around.16 episodes, several with commentaries. As ever, strong scripts, powerful performances and an abundance of gore. Probably never before have so many heads been severed, staked, crushed or splattered - special effects disturbingly realistic.Andrew Lincoln as Rick greatly impresses, often movingly so. Forever he struggles to cope, fearful of sinking to levels of depravity simply to survive. His top concern is for what remains of his family - relationship with son Carl destined for a bumpy ride.Special mention must be made too of Scott Wilson as Hershel. Old and wise, he is virtually a father figure to them all, rallying spirits when the going gets tough (which it does for most of the time).Generous bonuses fill Disc 5. A ninety minute feature considers each episode in respect of the characters and plot development. For a further seventy five minutes those episodes are explored from a technical point of view, how various production challenges were overcome. There are special items on two prominent characters who perish: one demise greatly regretted, the other most decidedly not. An eighteen minute contribution shows how the zombies were created. An in-joke has some modelled on famous film zombies, delight great when fans recognize. In less gifted hands, such themes could represent a tasteless gorefest. THE WALKING DEAD is far more worthy than that, emphasis on issues raised when odds are so much against, agonizing decisions required simply to stay alive. For some, it will bring out their best - they showing strengths hitherto unsuspected. When this is so, hope remains for humanity.Rick is thus one with whom many viewers will identify, the hope great he will survive Season 5.Recommended, but anyone squeamish needs to stay well away.

Child Actors
Just finished watching Season 4 & thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. I got up today feeling very tired & dispirited & I turned it on to watch a bit of it over breakfast. Fatal, turning it on at all, because I then spent the rest of the day watching the last 2 DVD'S back to back! The dishes are still in the sink, the floor still needs sweeping, the rug still needs hoovering & i just sat here mesmerised by the survivors fight for survival. (And I NEVER watch TV in the day as I think it's the thin end of the wedge, I usually force myself to DO chores during the day... eurgh.) It makes me wonder about my own character make up when I can watch Downton Abbey & Mr Selfridge & find both equally enjoyable & engrossing & then jump to Homeland & The Walking Dead with no trouble at all. I also find it remarkable that Andrew Lincoln can go from being a lovable twit in Teachers to the brooding character that makes up Rick in The Walking Dead. Obviously the mark of a good actor in that he is totally convincing at all times. Then there's the kids... I've always been fascinated by the fact that some really, REALLY, young kids are capable of being totally, blown away, amazing actors from such very young ages. How do they do it? I've seen kids as young as 3 be totally amazing, convincing actors. The little boy in Kramer vs Kramer, the 2 little girls in When a Man Loves a Woman for example are extraordinary actors. Then there's Dakota Fanning in The War of the Worlds & Hide & Seek, Elle Fanning in Super 8. A whole bunch of amazing child actors in that film. And then there are the characters of Carl & Lizzie & Mica in The Walking Dead. They're just extraordinary & mesmerising to watch. But, having watched the last 2 DVD's I've now got to wait another 12 months, probably, to be able to afford to watch Season 5 (sob :'( )

Continues to stroll along at an excellent pace
This show continues to get better and better. This season starts off months after Season 3 and the survivors have been living in peace at the prison. Unfortunately a fast acting flu type sickness spreads the prison killing most of the newcomers and extras. Its not long until only a handful are still fit enough to arm up against the Governor who returns seeking both revenge and the sanctuary of the prison with more recruitments to his army.I personally felt that episode 8 of this season should have been the Season 3 finale with the Governor finally beaten. It felt like an unwanted intrusion in season 4. The sickness storyline was more than enough for Rick's group to handle. As another reviewer mentioned the deaths continue and sometimes it a shame to see long standing characters bite the dust especially characters that still have potential but it does get tiresome losing familar faces for newbies all the time. There are some great episodes like Carol centric episode "The Grove" and some fantastic set pieces such as the zombies dropping from the roof of the shopping centre in the opening episode. The back episodes of this season are more character based. Having escaped the rubble of the prison the survivors have all been split up into groups and each episode focuses on each group. Some characters such as Bob and Beth are finally given some development. The finale sees some of these groups come together at Terminus which isn't exactly what they think it will be....The DVD is packed with extras including interviews, featurettes and commentary tracks on selected episodes (Some of the cast are involved in these - Hershal, Beth, Darryl, Carol and Tyreese). All in all ths is an excellent package and well worth the price.

They play fine. I remember watching the first season of The ...
The discs come in plastic snap cases. They play fine.I remember watching the first season of The Walking Dead (2010- ) back in 2010. I’d never heard of the show and didn’t know anything about it. I was searching for a new favorite show after Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009) ended. The first time I watched The Walking Dead the unexpected blood and gore made me jump off the couch and walk around the living room, pacing and laughing in a defense mechanism sort of way. I was so shocked to see something that graphic on TV.After I got over my initial shock The Walking Dead became one of my favorite shows, until the fourth or fifth season. I was watching the show to see what characters from the quarry in the first season would survive to the end of the series. I dreamed of how I would end the show if I was in charge of the series. I wanted to see Carl kill Rick, then Daryl kill Carl, then Carol kill Daryl, and then have Carol surrounded and ripped apart by walkers, with Morgan watching from a second story window of a nearby building, muttering “I told them to clear. They needed to clear.” But that didn’t happen and when I heard the show’s creators talking about twelve or more seasons I realized there was no planned ending, and then they started spinoff shows like Fear the Walking Dead (2015- ), and I lost all interest in the show and stopped watching the series after season six. With no planned ending The Walking Dead is just another soap opera that I don’t care to follow. There are so many wonderful shows available to binge watch these days. I’m not going to waste my time and money on a show that doesn’t know where it’s going. Maybe I’ll watch the last episode of the show if the series ever ends to see what characters from the quarry in season one make it to the end. The show’s characters’ initial goal of surviving, established in season one, is what I cared about. I wanted to see what characters from season one survived and if they found a cure for the disease. With those goals muted the series is a ship without a rudder. If you’re looking for good stuff to watch consider miniseries like The Astronauts Wives Club (2015), Band of Brothers (2001), Frank Herbert’s Dune (2000), Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune (2003), Into the West (2005), Lonesome Dove (1989), Manhattan (2014-2015), Return to Lonesome Dove (1993), Pride and Prejudice (1995), Taken (2002) and The 10th Kingdom (2000), which are all terrific because they have clear beginnings that establish an objective, then strong middles and conclusive endings where the goal is achieved, like a good novel.Other shows I’ve really enjoyed include Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009), Breaking Bad (2008-2013), Cowboy Bebop (1998), Downton Abbey (2010-2015), Firefly (2002), Game of Thrones (2011-2019), Granite Flats (2013-2015), The IT Crowd (2006-2013), Jericho (2006-2008), Merlin (2008-2012), The Prisoner (1967-1968), Rome (2005-2007), Spartacus: Gods of the Arena (2011), Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010), Stargate: SG-1 (1997-2007), Stargate: Atlantis (2004-2009), Star Trek (1966-1969), Star Trek Voyager (1995-2001), and The Tudors (2007-2010). I didn’t list any contemporary series I’m following that don’t have an end date yet, not conducive to binge watching from beginning to finish. If you like reading try some of my favorite fantasy and sci-fi authors: Richard Adams, Palo Bacigulupi, Suzanne Collins, Abe Evergreen, Diana Gabaldon, Hugh Howey, George Martin, Brandon Sanderson, John Scalzi, and Andy Weir.
