Great, easy to use device
The SmartHalo is a great device for getting around town on a bike. It securely attaches to the bike and looks cool in the process. The shipping was surprisingly quick. Despite choosing the free non-Prime shipping, I got my device in 2 days. The packaging looks smart with an Apple-like attention to details. The initial setup is a bit time-consuming but the app guides you with clear step-by-step instructions and helpful diagrams.Using the SmartHalo is very easy and intuitive. The app is slick and intuitive. Once you get out the door you don't use to use the app anymore though, which is really nice. You can control most functions with taps on the device. I was impressed to notice that the touchscreen stayed 100% responsive even when wearing thick gloves. I particularly enjoyed the compass navigation, where the device literally points you in the right direction and lets you choose your own route; this is ideal when cycling in a familiar city.Early impressions are that the battery life is very good. I used it on a 2-hour bike ride and the battery barely went down by 10%. Taking the device off the mount to charge it with the key can be a bit finicky, but it beats the alternative of having to fish out a very long USB cable to charge it on the bike itself!I like the fitness tracking metrics. The set-and-forget nature of that process keeps things simple.Overall I'd recommend this device to anyone who gets around town by bike. You get a lot of functions for a relatively low price and the device and app are very well designed.

Mounting brackets SUPER CHEAP
Would love to review the actual Smart Halo product, but the mounts are so cheaply constructed I have yet to get it on my bike. If you buy it, go ahead and spend the extra money for two or three extra mounting bracket sets as they will fall apart on you. The screws easily pull out the little brass insert from the thin plastic. You will be warned to not over tighten, but even with only a light tightening the brass just pulled right out. Not sure how this system can hold up over any sort of road conditions and it will certainly break if anyone tries to forcibly remove it from your handlebars (without tools).

This is a super useful technique for me
I am an enthusiastic city bicyclist, and I usually use the Citi bike share network in New York to commute around Manhattan. The SmartHalo’s turn-by-turn navigation works as advertised, and helps me route to different destinations, where previously I would have to keep the directions in my head. This is especially helpful when cycling in the older parts of New York that do not adhere to the grid system, such as the Bowery, Chinatown, and the Financial District. In terms of mounting the SmartHalo device to the Citibike, I found that the SmartHalo works well when combined with a flexible tripod and an adapter cell phone mount (as seen in the photo). This allows me to clamp it to the handlebars of the bike share, without any other special equipment. I’d use this at your own discretion, because it’s a system I came up with and not SmartHalo. This is a super useful technique for me, because I can use the SmartHalo with the NYC bike share system while on the go, and with other bike share systems while traveling. This is another case where SmartHalo shines: navigating in unfamiliar cities. It’s great to have a device that I can carry with me that can guide me around. The app is particularly helpful in this regard, as it allows me to select different possible routes, including “Fastest” and “Safest”.I have been happy with this purchase, and I look forward to following the future development of SmartHalo.

The light is not very bright
The light it produces is like the lights I used 10years ago. More of a be seen than a see light. If I'm relying on using it for directions I have to really slow down otherwise I will pass a turn before the navigation tells me to take it. I am glad for the navigation when I need it, but I need more light than this produces, and it occupies the space where my light goes. There are several dark areas I go through that just don't get illuminated by it. To clarify on the speed, my usual is between 13 to 18 mph, and I have to slow way down probably to about 8mph to stay in sink with the navigation. I found it easy to instal. I charge it with a portable power bank. I really like some of the features in the fitness mode. My favorite is to set a speed goal. Then it displays a ring that changes colors as you move through different speeds. If your trying to get faster it's a good tool. If it had a brighter light I would love it more, as I am not usually using the navigation and only using the light on it. And if one day it starts to learn to adapt directions to the speed of your cycling I would really like it more.

Looks great, but the one I received was definitely not new
My “new” product came with scuffs and scratches and was paired to another phone. I’m kind of bummed out because otherwise it looks great. I didn’t know I was buying refurbished.

I really like it, but at this point you should wait for the Halo 2
Bicycle I bough on craigslist $360E-bike conversion kit $160Battery to run the bike $380Other miscellaneous bike stuff $180Putting an alarm on over $1,000 worth of bike stuff... priceless.I got the Smart Halo mostly because I wanted an alarm on my E-Bike. I spent a little more on the Halo over other alarm systems because of all the other goodies. Less than a week after I got it installed, I got a targeted ad directing me to Kickstarter for the Halo 2.... damn timing.... The Halo 1 is a little difficult to figure out. You can connect with it via you phone to give it instructions, then you can communicate with it literally with morse code. 4 short taps will direct you to your work address. 3 short taps will direct you to home, 4 long taps will end navigation mode.I had the opportunity to use the light in the dark last night, it was significantly better than nothing, but not what I would call good. More importantly however, I had forgotten a flashlight and if it wasn't there, I could have been pulled over, so that was nice.100% anyone who does a lot of biking should get one, but.... at this point, you might as well wait for the second generation to be released.
