Lonely Planet Mexico: Perfect for exploring top sights and taking roads less travelled (Travel Guide)

I like the new design which is bolder and more in your face. I also am very happy they have dropped the pages of listings of hotels and restaurants which are better found on TA or Google or elsewhere. Yes they do still list some but within area sections. This means the book is 200 pages shorter but with more content. I am off tomorrow for 6 weeks and it only came out a week ago so I haven’t checked it all but the content on Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta is excellent . The stuff on the capital is so much better organised than it was too. I should add I have been using Lonely Planet guides since 1980 (my first was LP Nepal)

As other reviews have mentioned, the new layout whilst improved visually, the quality/amount of content is poor and massively reduced. I used to love Lonely Planet books for restaurant recommendations, advice on how to book activities and all the other uselful advice they had in the book. Now it’s full of pictures, the layout isn’t utilising the space and gives very little recommendations for well, anything!!I understand they may fell the need to update and move on, but what made Lonely Planet books so good was the vast amount of information packed into the pages of the previous style.

Like many of the reviews I am a little dissapointed with how they’ve set out this lonely planet guide. It’s full of beautiful photos and helpful advice but I have found it quite hard to navigate - especially as Mexico is such a huge country and there is loads to do!

The era of old school travelling is gone by and so Lonely planet guide books seemed to have moved on... I will miss the witty reviews of places to sleep and eat as well as the useful getting there and away info. Yes, you can find everything on the Internet these days but nevertheless. Lots of photos- not sure these are necessary - and not so much content.Been to half of the world with these books and I'll be sad to move on.

LP guides used to be travel guides with a lot of practical, useful info, almost a survival guide (lots of info on logistics, how to get to a place, where to sleep). This Mexico guide reflects the new style of these books: lots of beautiful pictures and info on things to see but no info at all on where to stay, where to eat and more important how to get there. In summary, old LPs are travel guides, new LPs are sightseeing guides.

I used to buy many Lonely Planet books as a filter to online research. If you’re looking for lists/contact details/prices of places to sleep/eat/drink, want to know how to get between A&B, what the sightseeing highlights are then look elsewhere. This is just full of photos and information generally irrelevant to the independent/budget traveller

Prefer the old format with lots of helpful information and history. This new layout seems focused on looking colourful and full of pictures. While some pictures are helfpul, I buy this book for the vast written content not because it looks flashy and colourful.Lonely Planet please revert back to the old format!

The most useful "Getting there and away" sections of the older LP guides are absent, the establishment recommendations content is drastically reduced and the maps are almost to faint to be readable! LP seems to be for the trendy casual tourist only!

well written, lots of detail

Comprehensive guide with most of sights noted in the book. Useful tips for trip preparation. Bad building quality, the book was separated from the cover from day one.

Compared to the past Lonely planet’s travel guides are getting worse. Less information compared to the past and prices increasing. The best part were accommodations and restaurants long lists in every place. Now the lists count just 2 or 3 recommendations.Also price is increasing, it went up of 30% compared to few years ago.Don’t know if I will consider to by another one for my next trip.

I bought this Lonely Planet because I went to live in Mexico for 3 months in 2023 and it was published in 2023. Unfortunately I found a lot of information was out of date e.g. we went to the pyramids in Cholula but all of the underground tunnels were closed and had been closed since COVID
