battle hayward & bower Gentian Violet Spray

Good value and effective.

I thoroughly recommend this for any chicken keepers.Saved my chicken with a blown vent. Reduced the hens pain and made it heal much quicker than normal. Only downside was my hen had a purple bottom for about a month. Easy to use with its pump spray nozzle.

I purchased this as I had a bully hen who managed to pack another hens vent until it bled profusely. I washed her wound and then applied sugar as a coagulant to cause the blood to clot. Once the bleed calmed down and clotted I applied this. She winced ever so slightly so i assume the sting wasn't too uncomfortable. I applied it liberally. The wound was completely red raw, but using this dyed the area completely violet. Ideal as hens live pecking red areas.It did a good job at preventing infection.The bully hen was probably put off nipping her again by about 85%. So it did not completely remove the urge but certainly did help considerably. However, previously I noticed the bully hens actions inspired the rest of the flock to get involved in the pecking of rear ends. But since using this they all seem non plussed about doing so.The spray bottle is pretty good at directional spraying. However in the wind it is dispersed. The violet spray stains human skin and clothing. So I'd suggest using an apron and gloves.My hen had about three or four days of wound spraying. Weeks and weeks later her tail feather plumage still has a violet tinge. But I haven't bathed her since but it is clearly fading which is good.The bottle is huge. Unnecessarily large for a backyard keeper like me, more a commercial size but it is well priced so I don't mind.

My poor chicken has been bullied badly by her mates. When I arrive home I found a big bloody wound on the back of her head. She looked traumatised. Will not eat or drink or move for a few days. I have to force feed her some sugary water and egg soup. My biggest worry was her wound as it is very big and I am scared of infection. This medication works really well on covering the wound. No smell and no pain. She is better now after two weeks of recovery. Unfortunately her mates still doesn't accept her even though there are all females and hatch together.

Bought to help heal two of my bantams who were looking rather patchy and sore in places after a period of stress. Certainly seems to help discourage the culprit and aid new feather regrowth. It's a good size bottle too and should last me ages. However, do heed the warnings about this stuff staining anything and everything it touches! Make sure you prepare thoroughly, cover your clothes and wear disposable gloves etc, don't just "wing it" like I did and end up with purple hands for the best part of 24 hours!

Product is fine but only used a couple of times and the spray broke.

Effective based in application

The spray causes a bit of a mess so best use a cotton wool pad and wear rubber gloves as it stained me and my cream carpet, but the stain did come out of the carpet, I still have bright purple fingers and my dog has lilac streaks through his white hair, but he is very happy as a sore he has had for the past few weeks has cleared so I'm over the moon with this product. (the cream the vet gave us did not work)
