Do you need to treat the wood to make it last? It does not seem to be treated at all

The wood withstands weathering very well. I haven't treated mine and the squirrels kind of like it that way, I think. Don't forget they are foragers and used to searching in and out of fallen branches etc for food. So it seems quite natural to them to find food in a kind of natural place.Only thing I added was a square piece of fine stainless steel mesh inside on the bottom on 10mm. wood bearers to keep the feed off the base where it can get soggy if wet weather. I feed them hazelnuts in shells, which they take away to store, peanuts, which are consumed readily and cashew nuts, which are their favourite. The cashews at around £10 a kilo are expensive, but, don't I just love to see them getting eaten. The squirrels are getting quite tame now.

Is this product assembled when it gets delivered, or am I expected to assemble it?

Hi it comes fully built so all you do is screw or nail it to the fence or tree. Put a small stone just under the lid to start with to prop it a bit so the squirrels know to lift the lid to get the food. The lid stays open sometimes so you might have to shut it sometimes. I screwed it but not tight so to empty out the uneaten food i turn it upside down on the fence to empty it. Its much easier than trying to scope it out or remove the plastic front. Hope that all helps. Bit more than you asked for, sorry.

Can I screw the feeder onto a fence also what kind of screw do I use as I thought this was supplied with the box?

Yes, the box can be screwed to a wooden fence, ours is screwed to a wooden fence post. It’s a very sturdy box. It wasn’t supplied with screws, but ordinary wood screws will fix it the length of which depends in the thickness of the fence. Hoping that helps 🙃

I have purchased this squirrel box and was wondering if anyone can tell me what the screw in hook thing is for on the left hand side?

It's even better than that! You'll find over time that there's peanut skins/bad food left at the bottom of the feeder.You simply loosen this, take out the Perspex, clean and reverse the procedure.
