So This is Permanence: Joy Division Lyrics and Notebooks

It kind of "is was it is". What I thought Ian was singing though, was *not* what it was!! Hence many shocks and surprises making it five stars for me.

This is a beautifully presented book. The binding is almost identical in colour and texture to the hessian hard binding of the initial release of 'Still'. I cannot believe that this is coincidental, but even if it is, to hold the book in one hand, and 'Still' in the other acts as a time machine, taking you back to 1980, and the life and death of Joy Division. The content of the book is powerful, and again, presented memorably. Beyond the interesting introductions by Deborah Curtis and Jon Savage, the first half of the book contains scans of IC's handwritten lyrics, opposite printed copy for clarity. The book's second section contains a wealth of scans of unused lyrics and personal material. I found the whole book to be mesmerising, particularly as, some 35 years ago, I had rung Wilson at Granada and during the conversation I asked him where I could get hold of copies of IC's lyrics. After a few minutes talking about other things Wilson said, "those lyrics you want...they're not really available to anyone at all". He explained; "Ian writes them on bits of paper and keeps everything in plastic bags". I didn't take that seriously at the time, putting it down to typical Wilson-esque nonsense, but it's since been confirmed to be true many times in countless articles. To finally have a book of those lyrics, and so much more, after so many years, is a happy thing indeed. Credit to DC and JS. Thank you both.

Superbly packaged book with copies of original lyrics

I bought this for my friend's birthday as he's a fan of Ian Curtis, who he says was a poet. He was overwhelmed when he unwrapped his gift and keeps quoting lyrics to me.

Nice book. Great if you want to ponder over lyric meanings and personal artefacts. There's no reading material here though for anyone who's wondering.

Oh what Joy......When this Wonderful book arrived I couldn't open it from the wrapping I wanted to keep it just the way it was.......and a couple of weeks later after walking past it constantly I asked my partner to unwrap it for me......I was totally engrossed, Have been a Fan since the very first days on the John Peel show...hiding under my cover listening to the Radio while I should have been sleeping was only 8 at the time but I loved music....didn't understand the lyrics obviously but the Sound blew me away.....have been in Love with Joy Division Ever since....and am still an Insomniac....Deborah Curtis needs to take a bow....If you Love The Legacy of Ian Curtis this is a must but you now that anyway

This book is a great artefact, it lingers from the Hessian covered Still, if your a collector this is something I really think that you will want in your collection. I really enjoyed the letters written to Curtis by the fans. I only wonder if 'So This is Permanence' is a definitive collection from the remains of Curtis's archive of writing.

If you're a Joy Division/Ian Curtis fan, you really should add this to your collection!

Loved the immediate intimacy of reading a HUGE compilation of the post-punk GENIUS's written lyrics in all forms... This is my first foray into Joy Division literature and DID NOT DISAPPOINT !!! Just an ABSOLUTE EMPATHETIC view of Ian Curtis' work- GOD BLESS I.C. and Joy Division !!!

Deserves 5 stars simply because of what it is. Arrived promptly and on time. Condition leff something to be desired. Crumpled spine corner, likely from an impact. Back cover had a huge crease from top to bottom, where it appears to have been folded.As for the book itself (aside from handling), it is exactly as described: lyrics/notes from one of the most interesting and influential frontmen in Rock to be tragically taken away too soon.But if you're reading this, you likely know exactly what this book contains, and therefore little else need be said of it."I'm not afraid anymoreI watch them all as they fallBut I remember when we were young"-Ian Curtis, "Insight"

Se amate i Joy Division dovete avere questo libro con tutti i testi editi ed inediti di Ian Curtis che poi sono diventati canzoni. Peccato che non sia stato ancora tradotto in italiano.

Un must have.Dommage que la version brochée soit moyenne, trop souple trop grise, pas noir profond comme sur l'annonce. Elle ressemble plus à un syllabus bon marché.
