The Jack of All Trades
CLP (Clean, Lubricate, Protect) is an old-school combination lubricant and cleaner. I was issued it during all the time I was in the military and it just plain works. As a civilian, I went on multiple hunts for the ultimate lubricant and cleaner for firearms. One that can stand up to extreme heat and cold, effectively cleans carbon from barrels and chambers and hopefully doesn't completely poison me. I have bought countless different lubricants and countless different cleaners over the years. Some exceeded in one area but failed in others. Some were only lubricants or only cleaners. Some turned solid in extreme cold and no longer lubricated. Some liquified in heat and would leave the metal you are trying to protect bare. I have come back to CLP again and again. It's a fairly well-rounded cleaner and lubricant. It doesn't do anything exceedingly well, but is a decent jack of all trades. It is a compromise, at best. CLP seems to fair well-enough in the heat and the cold. It is a liquid, so it is thin and will have to be applied more often. Having a grease available will also help with lubricating in extreme temperatures because is it thick and stays where you want it to. I use Super Lube Multi-Purpose Synthetic Grease, which I haven't had freeze solid and it doesn't melt away with heat. With enough elbow grease, CLP cleans lead and carbon well-enough, but doesn't do anything for copper. You need something ammonia-based to remove copper. Sweet's 7.62 is an effective ammonia-based copper remover that smells terrible and burns your eyes and it's what was issued to snipers back in my day and I believe it is still issued today. The original formula of Windex is also ammonia based and can work if there is not much copper build up. When I finish shooting for practice, I run a patch through the barrel with CLP on it so that it can be breaking down the carbon build-up until I get home and do a more thorough cleaning. It is just okay at rust protection because it is a thin liquid. It wipes off easily when traveling through brush. A dry lubricant may be better for rust protection because it doesn't run off. In the military, we would run a patch with CLP through the barrel before storing the weapons, to protect the lands and grooves from rust. When you are getting ready to take your weapon out to the field or on patrol again, you run a dry patch through the barrel to remove any excess CLP before shooting it, and it worked. If we were in very wet and humid areas, like much of South and Central America, or even in the American South, we would ghetto-fy our rifles, using petroleum jelly to coat any outside steel to try to prevent rust. It's a mess to work with and scrapes off easily in brush, but stays on okay if nothing is contacting it. Petroleum jelly is also cheap and readily available, plus it has many other uses, such as fire starting, wound healing, lip balm, etc. CLP doesn't do anything well. You would be better suited using multiple products to care for your weapon for cleaning, lubricating and protecting purposes. So why CLP? Because CLP is the jack of all trades that can be used on every part of your weapon without having to worry about damage. If you are just shooting at the range, then go ahead and use whatever combo of products you prefer to take care of your weapon. If you are in a situation where weight and space is at a premium then something like CLP excels, because it's one small bottle that can do everything you need it to. If you are in the military, if you are backpack hunting, or if the apocalypse has started, then having one bottle that has multiple purposes is priceless. I have a buttstock pouch on conventional rifles that holds a bottle of CLP, patches, a patch holder, a bronze bore brush and a pull-through flexible barrel cleaning "rod." In the pistol grips of every AR, there is a mini dropper bottle filled with CLP to keep the rifle running because I like to run them wet to lessen malfunctions. CLP may not be great for any one thing, but it still has its place.

I recommend this oil!
I used it on a pistol that was in pretty sad shape. It had some light surface rust. It will remove rust if you work at it. I believe it to be a great value for the money. This is a Quality product that works as advertised and I will buy it again.
