What I was looking for.

a great reference guide - its the smaller brother of the larger manufacturing processes book but still a useful smaller guide.should be on any designers shelf if you ask me

Following on from the success of his 2007 book,  Manufacturing Processes for Design Professionals , Thompson has refined and enhanced the manufacturing information and case studies to produce a more accessible read, specifically for product and furniture designers. The former book - a large hardback - has a somewhat encyclopaedic and weighty feel to it, which provides plenty of information with real authority, but somehow lacks the immediacy and casual-flick-through-for-idea-ness of the latter. The chapters are presented with a somehow improved clarity. For example, the smaller page size and square proportion seems to make the images feel bigger. Also, key criteria relating to visual quality, speed, tooling cost, unit cost, and environment, are presented alongside each process within an "essential information" diagram. This is a great quick tool for assessing the appropriateness of a particular process for your application. With both books it's great to see plenty of case studies with iconic designs that we know and love.The book's only downside is the lack of information on material properties, which has been abandoned for this stripped down format. But it's still highly content rich, in a format that will transport easily between home-bus-studio-workshop-etc. At under a tenner on Amazon at the moment, it's also considerably cheaper to buy than the earlier book.

Ordered book for my brother studying a levels, same as the one in school - perfect! Explains manufacturing process in plain English, easy to follow and understand.
