Pretty good seeds in fact (with caveats)
There are a lot of hates against Scotts seeds on lawncare forums. Admittedly, these are coated seeds, so be aware that only ~50% seeds. So for a 20lbs bag you only got 10lbs seeds (so keep this in mind when comparing with other seeds and in your seeding rates). I got this with a good deal so my price for *actual* seeds is still pretty good, and got the coating for free (i'd like to think they help).I even study the cultivars of these seeds and I think they are pretty good. For mine, it got about 50% in Duration and Nano (which Scotts uses a lot but I cannot find any ratings), and about 50% in Diablos, Thor, and Temple, which are all excellent cultivars in NETP. The grass texture and color are very nice.In my overseeding, I go with a higher seeding rate than the label suggests (which is only 2lbs actual seeds per 1000 sqft, and sounds a bit low unless you lawn is already dense). I cover with compost topdress, light water 2-3 times a day, and the germination rate is very good. The germination is slow though, I don't see anything until near 14 days. I also test without cover and the germination is even slower. So keep this in mind and be patient.I don't have a weed issue (another critism this often gets) as I used with Scotts Triple Action *for seeding* with mesotrine.Overall, I think this is very good seeds. Just be aware that you pay 50% for coatings, and the seeding rate may need to go a bit higher. I would happily buy again if this is on sale.

Spring, summer & fall
I kept this on hand throughout the spring, summer and fall. When a brown or bare spot would come up I would sprinkle some of this seed on it, then water it daily for the next 10 days and the grass always grew.

Great for harsh locations, but watch those expiration dates on the bag.
On the advice of a Scott’s employee, I planted this seed in a thin strip of land located between a concrete walkway and an asphalt driveway. In summer this spot gets very dry and bakes in the hot sun all day. All the grass in this location had died not even weeds would grow there. In early spring, I planted Scott’s Tall Fescue mix after raking out the soil and applying Scott’s starter fertilizer. The seed sprouted in about 2 weeks of daily afternoon watering. The grass in that area slowly thickened up before going dormant in midsummer. It came back to life in late fall and this spring it has become nice and thick. The Scott’s employee advised me that it may take several years for the grass to grow and give me the coverage I was seeking. I am very pleased with the performance of this seed mix in such a harsh location. In only one year, the grass has established itself and is thriving.ONE VERY SERIOUS WORD OF CAUTION WHEN BUYING GRASS SEED FROM AMAZON:I ordered more of this same seed this spring to tackle another trouble spot.It is now March 2024. The seed I received from Amazon had expired September 2023. I returned that unopened bag of seed and allowed Amazon to replace it rather taking a refund.Big mistake. The replacement bag of seed had also expired December 2023.If you buy grass seed from Amazon, make sure you check the expiration date before using the seed or you won’t be able to return it and you’ll be forced to make a warranty claim to the seed company.

Before and After
Highly recommend Tall fescue for north east lawns , they grow deep roots so are drought resistant, they are disease resistant as well, True Green tipped me off to use this type of seed , Best time of year to seed is fall , water 3 times a day for only a few minutes, make sure soil just gets moist but not too saturated, before and after pics about 3 weeks apart

Poor germination
Follow the directions exactly as it was written all the watering. I did get some germination but overall I thought that it was not what I would’ve expected from something similar and things that I’ve used in the past not the quality I had expected of this product.

All clumped up, nearly impossible to spread, smells of ammonia,
The pictures tell it all, or nearly so. It also smelled terrible, very bad of ammonia. Don’t like not knowing what chemicals I’m actually putting on my lawn. Took me 5 times longer to apply. Had to run it through a sieve, and use gloves to try to separate it. Some was like rubber (pic), very strange, and had to be discarded, Should have paid more attention, too. “Coated” seed, so only about 1/2 the weight is actually seed. Coated seeds are apparently notorious for short shelf life. I guess this is ok if you are only doing a small area, and don’t want to worry much about fertilizing and watering. Much cheaper to buy seed and fertilizer separate. I have timed irrigation, so watering every 6 hrs, for 3-4 min is also not a problem. I’ll never buy Scott’s seed again, or any coated seed. I do love my Scott’s battery powered sprayer and clippers. I have a rare neuromuscular disease, and those work great. This is also the reason I got so frustrated with this seed. I have an extremely limited amount of energy, and this seed just wore me out.The upside: 100% money back guarantee from Scott’s, fast, as soon as they got the pictures.

Fast growing.. price right
Six days germination. Filled in nicely. Budget friendly seeds. Time will tell if it can handle the hot summer days.
