Merlyn tells the tale
Caius and Publius are gone now and the story telling falls to Merlyn. Well written, but the only complaint I had was the ongoing religious debate between Merlyn and some of the clerics in the book. (/yawn). Uther, Merlyn's cousin is as different from him as night and day. Driven, hot-headed and prone to violence, Merlyn begins to question his relationship with Uther. Fast moving and violent, this book shows the two very different men on a collision course.

Too Much Padding!
The first book of this series, The Sky Stone, was original, well constructed, with amazingly clear detail on life in 5th century Britian. The main characters were well drawn and each, the heroes and the villans, held my interest. The second book, The Singing Sword, was almost as good but there was a little padding going on. The Eagles Brood, the third of the series is a wonderful 300 page book - padded into a 600 page book. The story line follows the previous books, but it is too much of a good thing. The details of life during that time were well and exhustingly explained in the first two books. We don't need the detail all over again. The book is over populated with insidental characters that are presented as major figures who then are quickly killed off or just left out of the ensueing narrative. Minor characters, with important messages, just seem to pop up here and there in order to pull the stoey line back on track and help move it along. Frankly, towards the end of this book I was just waiting for it to end. Enough is enough!

The second time I’ve read this series...
and I am more immersed than I had many years ago. This is probably my favorite historical fiction series. I have read hundreds of Roman historical fiction books and while so many are captivating, this is just masterful.

Arthur enters the story line!
Jack Whyte does a superb job in this continuation of his version of the Arthur legend. This is the way Arthur really could have come to power. I've read this series (9 books in all) at least 5 times front to back and plan to read them again often at least once per year probably. I can't say enough good things about this author and this series! In this book Arthur enters the story (actually, he did that at the end of the previous book, The Saxon Shore in the closing pages). This series is just brilliant. The best and most credible retelling of the Arthur legend.

the history behind the legend that was Camelot (camulod)
This is book two of the series, and a continuation of the background and back story. Great attention to detail and good character development all give life to the time period. The writing style and content gives a gender neutral read, although if you don't care for military details you may want to start late in the series. Looking forward to book 3.

Merlin finds love and Arthur is born
This series is a fascinating take on the Arthurian legend; the level of historical detail is unparalleled. In this book, Merlin finds love and Arthur is born. Whyte always ends each book with a twist that leads the reader straight into the next book!

exciting and descriptively beautiful masterpiece of literature
Jack Whyte continues to create a realistic, exciting and descriptively beautiful masterpiece of literature. He captures the readers as the follow the protagonist he continues to develop the fabled legendary kingdom of Camelot. You get pulled into the sweeping saga and become attached to his characters so when they pass away or are killed, you feel as broken-hearted and saddened as the survivors.

Great series!
I've loved this series for years. My Dad bought me the Skystone for my birthday a few years back and had it signed by Jack Whyte. Been a fan ever since. I've also read the Templar trilogy and will mostly like read the Laird book as well. Keep up the good work Jack!

Still a page turner.
Whyte knows how to tell a story to keep the reader interested. This retelling of the legend of Merlin brings another twist to the story.
